Dayton Dragons News Release
The Wisconsin Timber Rattlers (13-11) won a season high eighth straight game taking the first game of the four game series with the Dayton Dragons (12-15) 4-2 Thursday night at Fifth Third Field. The game included a one hour twenty-one minute rain delay and is the seventh consecutive win for the Rattlers at Fifth Third dating back to 2001.
Wisconsin jumped out to an early 1-0 lead as first baseman Jon Nelson singled, went to second on a wild pitch and scored on a Dustin Delucchi single in the third inning. Wisconsin scored the second run in similar fashion as Corey Harrington singled, stole second and was plated by a double off the bat of Nelson.
The Timber Rattlers picked up the third run of the game after Delucchi led off the fourth inning with a walk, went from first to third on a throwing error from Dragon catcher Miguel Perez, and scored on Dragon third baseman Mark Schramek's first of two errors on the evening. Wisconsin would lead 3-0 before the rain stopped play.
Neither starting pitcher came back to the mound after the delay, but Dragon starter Jan Granado (L, 1-2) was tagged with the loss, after allowing three runs in 3.2 innings of work. Wisconsin starter T.A. Fulmer (ND) also was tagged with a no decision failing to go the required 5.0 innings to pick up the win. Joel Barreto allowed the final run of the game for the Timber Rattlers. Barretto walked both Matt Hagen and Delucchi to put runners on first and second with two outs. Hagen came around to score on the second error from Schramek to make the lead 4-0 in favor of Wisconsin.
Dayton scored their first run of the game as Travis Wong was hit by a pitch, went to third on a Schramek double, and score on Brad Correll's one out single to make the score 4-1. The Dragons would once again try to mount a comeback in the eighth inning off Oscar Delgado (S 1). The left-hander surrendered one run to the Dragons to close the game out at 4-2. Dave Viane (W 1-0) picked up his first win of the season tossing 4.0 innings of one-run baseball.
The Dragons and Timber Rattlers continue the series Friday night at Fifth Third Field. 1410 ESPN Radio will carry the second game of the series live with the pregame show beginning at 6:30 pm. RHP Eddy Valdez will get the start for the Dragons while LHP Beau Hintz will throw for Wisconsin.
