Eugene Takes 5-1 Victory Over Aquasox

EVERETT, WA: Late-game contributions from Andrew Kachel, Diego Velasquez, and Matt Higgins propelled Eugene to a 5-1 victory this afternoon at Funko Field. The Emeralds secured a series sweep with their win.
Scoreless through six innings, Kachel put Eugene ahead in the seventh with a two-run double. It was his eighth hit of the series.
With one out in the bottom of the eighth inning and down by two, the Sox were in a peak position to make a late-game comeback. With runners on the corners for Everett, an error on a pickoff attempt by Matt Mikulski allowed Freuddy Batista to score, giving the Sox their first run of the game. Unfortunately, they were not able to tie the game up. Josh Hood hit a fly ball that was too shallow to allow Brock Rodden to tag up, and then RJ Schreck struck out, leaving the tying run stranded at third base.
Eugene tacked on three more runs in the top of the ninth inning on an RBI single by Velasquez and a 2-RBI single by Higgins. Those runs would be all the insurance that the Emeralds would need, securing their 5-1 victory.
Campbell University alumni Ty Cummings made his second start, tallying a career-high five innings pitched and career-high five strikeouts. He allowed a career-best one hit with zero earned runs. Pitching very efficiently during the game, Cummings needed only 62 pitches to complete his five innings of work. Also pitching for the Sox were Allan Saathoff, Townsend, Shaddon Peavyhouse, Holden Laws, and Stefan Raeth. Saathoff threw 1.2 innings while striking out two batters and Peavyhouse pitched a scoreless inning.
The AquaSox bats remained quiet throughout the game. Bill Knight recorded the only hits of the game for Everett, collecting a single and double. He is now hitting .323 on the season, which is the third-highest batting average among the Frogs. Knight also stole a base, marking his fourth stolen bag this season. Colin Davis walked twice, and Hood and Rodden walked once each.
LOOKING AHEAD: The AquaSox will hit the highway and travel eastbound to Spokane for a six-game road trip against the Indians. Spokane, the High-A affiliate of the Colorado Rockies, currently is tied for first place in the Northwest League after starting the season 8-1. Right-hander Ryan Hawks will make his second start for Everett. In Hawks' last start, he threw 3.2 innings, striking out three batters and allowing two earned runs. The first pitch of Game One of the series is at 6:35 p.m. on Tuesday, April 16. The AquaSox will return to the friendly confines of Funko Field on April 30th.
