Hagerstown Suns News Release
Lakewood, NJ - Kameron Esthay hit his fifth homer of the season as the Hagerstown Suns fell to the Lakewood BlueClaws 4-1 on Monday night at FirstEnergy Park in the first game of a four-game series. Hagerstown falls to 24-38 overall and will play the second game of the series on Tuesday with a 7:05 PM first pitch.
Lakewood powered their way to a three-run lead against Hagerstown starter Matthew DeRosier in the second inning. With one out, Quincy Nieporte walked and went to second when Daniel Brito singled to right. Rodolfo Duran smacked the third pitch of his at-bat over the left field wall for his sixth home run of the season, giving the BlueClaws a 3-0 lead.
The Suns cut into Lakewoods' lead in the sixth with some muscle of their own against reliever Julian Garcia. After the Suns were held to one hit over the first five innings of play, Esthay hammered the first pitch he saw 374 feet over the right field wall. The homer was Esthay's fifth of the season and brought the Suns within two runs with a 3-1 score.
The BlueClaws added an insurance run in the ninth inning against Suns reliever Jared Brasher in his only inning of work. With one out, Nick Maton hit his fourth home run of the season over the right field wall to give Lakewood a 4-1 lead. The Suns got a baserunner in the ninth but couldn't put anything together, taking a 4-1 loss in the series opener.
DeRosier (2-4) threw seven innings while allowing three runs on four hits with two walks and six strikeouts in a loss. Brasher threw the eighth, allowing one run on Maton's homer with a strikeout.
Notes: DeRosier tied a career high with seven innings pitched... It's the fourth time he's done so... He's thrown at least six innings in four straight starts... Esthay has a hit in three consecutive games... He had his fifth multi-hit game of the season... The Suns are 7-12 in the first game of a series... They're also 2-3 when they have the same number of hits as their opponents... The Suns continue their four-game series against the Lakewood BlueClaws on Tuesday with a 7:05 PM first pitch... The Suns will send LHP Seth Romero (0-0, 3.38) to the mound against Lakewood RHP Ramon Rosso (3-1, 1.62)...
