YOUNGSTOWN, OHIO - The Youngstown SteelHounds announced today that ESPN personalities Barry Melrose and Steve Levy will be at the Hounds game on Saturday, March 17th when they host the Colorado Eagles. Face-off is scheduled for 7:05 PM (EST) at the Chevrolet Centre.
"Sports fans connect Barry (Melrose) and Steve (Levy) with hockey," said SteelHounds General Manager Joe Gregory. "Kevin (SteelHounds Head Coach Kevin Kaminski) has known them for a while and we are happy he has made it possible for them to be on hand at one of our games. They will both be dropping the first puck and who knows what else they will get involved in as the night progresses."
Melrose is currently a studio analyst for the National Hockey League (NHL) on ESPN and ESPN2. The former Los Angeles Kings Head Coach joined the "sports leader" in 1996 and has since been a part of NHL in-studio shows and broadcasts on ESPN and ESPN2 and also serves as a regular contributor on SportsCenter, ESPN radio and ESPN, the Magazine. Melrose was the head coach of the Kings from 1992-95 and led the team to the Stanley Cup Finals for the first time in franchise history during his inaugural season (1992-93). He also played over 300 NHL games during his 11-year playing career seeing time with Winnipeg, Toronto and Detroit (1979-86)
Levy has been a sports anchor on the highly popular SportsCenter since joining ESPN in August of 1993. He also handled play-by-play for the National Hockey League for a decade (1995-2005) on ESPN, ESPN2 and ABC. He is often referred to as Mr. Overtime due to the fact that he has announced the three longest televised games in NHL playoff history. Those games being the five overtime affair between Pittsburgh and Philadelphia in May of 2000, the five overtime thriller between Anaheim and Dallas in April of 2003 and the four overtime game between Pittsburgh and Washington in April of 1996 (Kaminski was a member of the Capitals at the time). Levy is a 1987 graduate of SUNY-Oswego, the same university that produced current SteelHounds play-by-play broadcaster Tim Sampsell.
Both Levy and Melrose are no strangers to minor league hockey as they previously were co-owners of the Adirondack Frostbite of the United Hockey League.
The SteelHounds have eight remaining home games with the game on March 17th being a part of the final regular season home weekend. For tickets call the Hounds at 330-747-PUCK (7825) or visit the team's online home at www.steelhounds.com.
