Washington, PA. - Lake Erie (14-20) after going 3-3 in their past six games started their week with a series against the second place team in the Western Conference, Washington Wild Things (22-12).
Low scoring affair between both of the teams as five of nine runs scored total came in the ninth inning. Lake Erie with an opportunity to start the week with a quality win, three errors got in the way as the Wild Things used the Crushers' mistakes to their advantage to win 5-4.
The first run came in the fourth inning. Sean Cheely for the Crushers drew a bases loaded walk, Kenen Irrizary scored. Washington answered by taking the lead in the fifth inning with a two run home run from Cole Brannen.
Both starters pitched effectively, keeping the game close. Matt Mulhearn, making his second start for the Crushers, threw five innings, allowed four hits, two runs, and struck out three. On the other side Thomas Hart outdueled Mulhearn. Hart lasted six innings, allowing three hits, one run, and struck out three.
The Crushers down one run heading to the seventh inning. Bryant Flete tied the game with a solo home run to right-center. In the ninth inning, Kenen Irrizary provided a clutch two RBI single, he gave the Crushers a two run lead with three outs to get.
Alexis Rivero out of the bullpen for the save. Two consecutive walks for the Wild Things in the ninth. Brannen sac bunted, drove in a run, and reached safely after the errant throw from Rivero to first base. Nick Ward, one of the best batting averages in the Frontier League, intentionally walked, having the bases loaded for former Crusher Jared Mang. Although Mang struck out swinging, it was a game-winning two RBI single from Scotty Dubrule, as the Wild Things won 5-4.
The Crushers (14-20) take on the Wild Things (22-12) for game two of the set tomorrow. First pitch is set for 6:05 p.m.
