Chico Outlaws News Release

CHICO, CA - Four errors led to five unearned runs for Orange County as the Chico Outlaws fumbled away the opener of a three-game series, dropping a 9-5 decision to the visiting Flyers Monday night at Nettleton Stadium.

Things actually started well for the Outlaws as Jesse Kovacs belted a two-run homer in the bottom of the 1st inning to give Chico an early lead. Orange County tied up the contest with two runs in the top of the 2nd on back-to-back errors by Kovacs and an RBI single by Garry Templeton II. The Outlaws utilized a Flyers miscue to re-take the lead in the bottom of the 2nd when Todd Gossage reached on a Dave Bacani error and came home when Eric Pringle tripled to the left field gap.

The Flyers went ahead to stay with two runs in the top of the 3rd set up by an error by Chico starting pitcher Derrick Loop. Rich Pohle got aboard when Loop dropped Pringle's throw while covering first base...two batters later Scott Goodman launched a two-run homer to right to put Orange County up 4-3. Buddy Morales led off the 4th with a solo homer...then later in the inning Bacani walked and scored when Kovacs sailed a throw past Jason Van Meetren trying to gun down Bret Levier at first...his third error of the contest giving the Flyers a 6-3 lead.

Orange County chased Loop in the 6th when Templeton singled home Brett Thomas and Levier cracked a two-run double to left, putting the Flyers up 9-3. Craig Kuzmic got Chico closer with a solo home run to led off the Outlaws 6th...then in the 7th Gossage scored from second when Thomas - charging from third to field Pringle's infield single - threw the ball away...the error cutting Orange County's advantage to four. But that would be all Chico would get the rest of the way, as Flyers relievers Andrew Soto and Ezequiel Ruvalcaba combined to retire the last six Outlaws batters in succession to lock down the series-opening 9-5 win.

Jason Howerton (2-2), pressed into service when scheduled starter Daniel Arizmendi experienced stiffness in his forearm while warming up prior to the game, allowed just three earned runs in six innings to get the win...Loop (8-5) was saddled with the loss. Bacani, Levier, Goodman and Templeton all had two hits as Orange County racked up 10 safeties on the evening...Daniel Nava went 3-for-4 and Pringle added two hits to pace Chico's nine hit attack (Nava tied an Outlaws club record by hitting safely in his 18th consecutive game). Monday's loss dropped Chico to 13-19 in the second half and 38-32 overall, while Orange County improved to 17-15 in the second half and 36-34 for the year. Game two of the series is scheduled for Tuesday with left-hander Matt Campbell (2-0) on the mound for the Outlaws; the Flyers will go with righty Mike Woolery (1-1). Game time is 7:05pm; hear all the action with "The Voice" of the Outlaws, Rory Miller, beginning at 6:35pm on the internet, on SportsFan 101.7 FM ESPN Radio or 1340 KEWE-AM.
