San Angelo Colts News Release

EDINBURG, Texas - Both the Edinburg Coyotes and visiting San Angelo Colts made four errors each on Thursday night in the series opener of a three-game set. However, only the Coyotes (21-28) took advantage of the miscues, scoring six unearned runs on their way to an 8-4 victory over the Colts (28-21) in front of 1,511 at Edinburg Baseball Stadium.

The Colts got off to a fast start but cooled off considerably after that as they posted three hits in the top of the first-including a three-run homer by Andres Rodriguez-but only two hits the rest of the way.

Edinburg tied the game at 3-3 with three unearned runs off Colts starter Logan Williamson (6-3) in the bottom of the first. With runners at first and second and one out, Robert Matlock hit a line drive to third that was caught by Aaron Cone, who then threw to second to try to double off Eric Gonzalez. Second baseman John Anderson was charged with an error when he couldn't receive the throw, which went behind him, allowing the runners to advance. After that play, Williamson walked four of the next five batters, including three with the bases loaded to force in three runs. Williamson settled down though, going 5 1/3 innings, allowing five runs, all unearned, on just three hits with four strikeouts and six walks, a season high.

After the Colts regained a 4-3 lead with an RBI double by Cone in the third, the Coyotes battled back with two more unearned runs in the sixth, chasing Williamson and taking their first lead of the night, a lead they didn't give up. With one out, Alex Entrekin reached on an error by shortstop Charley Belew (who, like Anderson, committed two errors) and Williamson then walked Angelo Fermin before leaving the game for right-hander Chris Weast. Gonzalez, the first batter Weast faced, singled to left to bring home Entrekin and Gary Roche hit a sacrifice fly to score Fermin and make it 5-4.

Those two runs were charged to Williamson but Weast was charged with three runs, one unearned, in the seventh when Edinburg scored three times on four hits plus an error by Anderson to make it 8-4. Logan Wood, Entrekin, and Fermin all hit RBI singles in the inning, with the latter two doing it off of Miliade Venas, who pitched the final 1 1/3 innings and was not charged with any runs.

Coyotes starter Aaron Guerra (4-1) picked up the win, lasting 6 2/3 innings while surrendering four runs, three earned, on only four hits with three strikeouts and four walks. Relievers Bryan Heaston and Isaac Daniels combined for 2 2/3 innings of scoreless relief and each got help from their defense. In the eighth off Heaston, with the bases loaded and one out, Anderson, representing the tying run, lined into an unassisted double play to the shortstop Fermin to end the inning. In the ninth off Daniels, Jason Crosland lined into an unassisted double play to the first baseman Matlock to end the game.
