Quebec Les Capitales News Release

September 9, 2005 - The Quebec Capitales put themselves one win away from their first postseason series win in franchise history with a 6-4 victory over the sloppy Brockton Rox in Game Two of the North Division Championship Series.

Of the first ten hitters to come to the plate for the Capitales, four reached on Brockton errors. The first three misplays came to no consequence, but the fourth opened the door to a five-run third inning explosion that gave Quebec all the offense they would need.

With two outs and no one on in the bottom of the third, Danny Scalabrini sent a groundball to Rox third baseman Jake Daubert, whose 21 errors during the regular season were a team-high. Daubert's subsequent poor throw allowed Scalabrini to reach safely and awoke the lethal middle of the Caps' order. Goeffrey Tomlinson singled, Eddie Lantigua singled home Scalabrini, Buck McNabb singled home Tomlinson, Todd Leathers doubled home both Lantigua and McNabb, and Olivier Lepine singled home Leathers for a 5-0 lead.

The two teams traded home runs by a pair of Eddies in the seventh, Eddie Gerald for Brockton and Lantigua for Quebec, before the Rox rallied in the eighth.

Consecutive base hits by Matt Cucurullo, Andrew Salvo, and Jake Daubert off reliever Derrick DePriest began the inning. Each man eventually scored - Cucurullo on Daubert's single, Salvo on a DePriest balk, and Daubert on a Gerald RBI single - as Brockton cut the deficit to 6-4 and brought the tying run to the plate. All went for naught, however, as DePriest struck out Willie King to end the inning.

Caps closer Cristian Mendoza worked a perfect ninth for his second save in as many games.

Quebec starter Julien Tucker (1-0) limited Brockton to one run over seven innings for the victory, striking out five while walking just one. Rox starter Grant Dorn (0-1) took the hard-luck loss, allowing six runs (five unearned) in his 6.2 innings.

The Capitales go for the sweep at 7:05 on Saturday night as the series travels south of the border to Campanelli Stadium. Dennis Boyd (4-5, 3.83) takes the mound for Brockton against former Rox pitcher Marcos Castillo (9-6, 3.97).
