Cutters Fall to Tornadoes 8-6

New Haven County Cutters News Release

The New Haven County Cutters will now face elimination from the Can-Am League playoffs on Saturday night after falling to the Worcester Tornadoes 8-6 in game three on Friday at Yale Field. The win gave the Tornadoes the 2-1 advantage in the best of five series.

The game was a back and forth affair until the top of the sixth inning. Trailing 5-4, Worcester?s first two batters in the frame, Steve Colabello and Alex Nunez, reached base. Lucas Taylor, attempting to sacrifice, bunted straight to Cutters starter Courtney Hall, who fielded cleanly and tried to force Colabello out at third. The throw was errant and allowed the tying run to score and put men on second and third with no outs. Another run crossed the plate when Tim Keinath, who came in to relieve Hall, uncorked a wild pitch, giving the Tornadoes the 6-5 lead.

Worcester added two more runs the following inning. Keith Beauregard doubled in a run, his third ribbie of the night, and then scored on a Nunez single.

The Cutters had previously stormed into the lead with a four-run fifth inning. Bill Peavey landed the big blow, ripping a double into the right-centerfield gap with the bases loaded, plating all three runners. But, the inning would stall after that and the next time New Haven County came to bat, they were trailing.

Orlando Encarnacion continued to torment Worcester pitching. Heading into the game, he was batting .625 for the first two games. He was 2 for 3 on the night, driving in a pair of runs.

Chris Shank (1-0) picked up the victory for the Tornadoes in relief of starter Alex Pena. Pena was chased from the game during the Cutters big fifth inning. He pitched four and one third innings, allowing five earned runs on six hits, striking out four.

Hall (0-1) was saddled with the loss after tossing five innings and surrendering six runs, four of which were earned. He fanned four Tornadoes.

The Cutters must win game four on Saturday night (7:05) to continue their season. Down 2-1 in the series, New Haven County will turn to Can-Am League Rookie Pitcher of the Year Jarrett Stawarz (9-7) to keep their hopes of reaching the championship series alive. Worcester's starter has yet to be determined.
