Erie Otters News Release
Owen Sound, Ontario - After a tough loss last night in Guelph, the Erie Otters made the trip up north to the Bayshore in Owen Sound, ON, to take on an Attack team who was riding high coming into the night. After being shut-out for the second time this season last night, Erie would look to find the back of the net for the first time on the road this season, while Owen Sound, who has been boosted by the return of the 8th Overall Pick in this past year's NHL Draft, Colby Barlow, looked to keep the Otters at bay in the first of six match-ups between the two teams.
The Otters came out firing on all cylinders looking to get on the board early and break their scoring drought on the road. Their calls would be answered as the captain Spencer Sova would score his first goal of the season on the power play to give Erie a 1-0 advantage. The Attack would continue to put pressure on the Erie defense firing puck after puck at Otters netminder Nolan LaLonde. Eventually, they would break through with defenseman Sam Sedley put away a rebound off of the lively Bayshore boards to even the score at 1-1. The Attack would continue to pile on the pressure but LaLonde would stand tall keeping the score even after 1. The Attack would lead in shots 13-7.
It would be the Attack to get on the front foot to start period number two. An early penalty would put the Otters a man down and on the power play, the Attack would strike with Landen Hookey placing a one-timer through the five-hole of LaLonde to give the Attack their first lead, making the score 2-1. They would double their lead a few minutes later with Colby Barlow scoring his third goal in two games to make it 3-1 Attack. Erie would respond well, jumping back on the front foot. At the 11:15 mark of the frame, Alexis Daviault would score his first of the year on a shot where he broke his stick. This made the score 3-2. The Otters would keep the foot on the gas with numerous chances. Malcolm Spence would make one count and tie the game back up at 3-3. The Attack would respond well, Deni Goure would score his team-leading fifth of the season to give the Attack a 4-3 lead going into the second intermission. The Otters would take a 26-22 lead in shots into the break.
With Erie down by a goal entering the third, the Otters were looking to even the score. They didn't have to wait long. Sam Alfano would drive to the net and put the puck behind Corbin Votary to even the game at 4-4. The Otters would keep the pressure on throughout the period and it would be the long-awaited first of the season for Carey Terrance to give the Otters their first lead since the first, 5-4 Erie. The Attack would look to stay in the game, creating numerous chances and late on, with just-over two minutes to play, Goure would score his second of the night to tie the game 5-5.
To overtime we would go with both teams gunning for the winner and the extra point. With chances at either end and both goaltenders coming up big in big moments, it would be Owen Sound's Ethan Burroughs scoring his first of the year to give the win to the Attack. The Otters would lead in the game's final shot total 45-31. Erie picks up their first point of the young season.
The Otters will return to the ice Thursday to take on the Niagara Ice Dogs at the Meridian Centre in St. Catharines, ON. They will return to home ice next Saturday night to take on the Windsor Spitfires. The first 1,500 fans through the doors will receive a free magnet schedule thanks to Harrell Automotive.
