
Energy Assistant Named Head Coach At Dakota State University

DES MOINES, IA, Apr. 22, 2009 - Iowa Energy Assistant Coach Gary Garner has accepted the position of Head Coach at Dakota State University in Madison, SD. Garner will assume duties immediately at Dakota State.
Garner was the Head Coach at Drake University for seven seasons beginning in 1981, and led the Bulldogs to the 1986 NIT tournament. Garner later coached Ft. Hays State to the NCAA Division II National Title in 1996, leading the team to a perfect 34-0 record. During his time at Ft. Hays State, Garner's squad won 49 straight games, the 5th longest streak in college basketball history.
The Iowa Energy introduced Garner as Assistant Coach on March 27, 2007. During his two years with the team, the Energy compiled a 50-51 record. The Energy won the D-League's Central Division this season before falling to Dakota in the 1st round of the playoffs.
"We are going to miss Coach Garner both on the floor and in the community. He was a great ambassador for our franchise and we wish him the best at Dakota State," said Energy General Manager Chris Makris.
