Erie Otters News Release
Erie, Pennsylvania - A night always bigger than the game of hockey. Erie would host its annual Hockey Fights Cancer Night (pres. by UPMC Health Plan & UPMC Hamot) on Saturday evening, working to raise awareness and funds for those fighting this terrible disease in the Erie community. Wearing specialty HFC jerseys against the visiting Guelph Storm, a tremendous crowd would be on hand for the heartfelt game night.
It would be a quiet beginning to the first period of Erie's annual Hockey Fights Cancer game. Both teams would combine for only seven shots in the first seven minutes before a turnover would see Vilmer Alriksson (13) and the Guelph Storm drawing first blood. Less than two minutes later, Jett Luchanko (20) would find the back of the net to extend the Guelph lead to 2-0. It would be Pano Fimis (18) to get the Otters on the board just under ten minutes into the first frame, and it would be all Otters offense for the rest of the first period. The Otters would outshoot their opponent 12-8.
The Otters would go on the penalty kill less than thirty seconds into the second period after a cross checking call on Owain Johnston. Twenty seconds later, Alex Messier would get called for a high-sticking penalty, putting the Otters on a 5-on-3 penalty kill. Rock solid defense from Erie would easily kill off the penalties and normal play would resume. Back to full strength, it wouldn't be long before the Otters struck gold again to tie the game up at 2-2. Ondrej Molnar (16) would be the one to tie it up for Erie and swing momentum back in their favor. It would be a flurry of penalties and penalty kills between the two teams, with each side finding themselves in the penalty box twice over a three-minute span. Otters' defense would weather the Storm's offensive onslaught after yet another penalty with less than five minutes to go, completing another perfect penalty kill to keep the game tied and the frame scoreless. The period would end with 4-on-4 play after both teams would get called for penalties and would end with the score remaining 2-2.
Desperate to pull ahead and grab some critical points, the Otters would strike early in the final frame to make it a 3-2 game in favor of the good guys for the first time all game. It would be Carey Terrance (28) who found the back of the net less than a minute into the period off the assist from Ondrej Molnar and Alexis Daviault. The third period would be more back-and-forth play after an early Otters' goal, and Jacob Gibbons in net for Erie would continue to keep the Storm at bay. Steadfast defense would see out an Otters' win, with the home team outshooting the Guelph Storm 34-26 in this important come-from-behind victory.
Erie will close out February home action on Sunday afternoon, hosting the Kingston Frontenacs for Sunday Family Funday. The first 500 kids in attendance will receive a free popcorn and soft drink, and fans should be on the lookout for free thunder sticks (pres. by A Bridge To Independence). Erie will then take its final long road trip of the season, as it embarks on the Eastern Swing. The trip will begin on Leap Day Thursday in Peterborough, at Kingston on Friday, and in Ottawa on Sunday.
