Emeralds Drop Game 3 Against Vancouver

June 2, 2023 - Northwest League (NWL)
Eugene Emeralds News Release

The Emeralds lost game 3 against Vancouver by a final score of 8-0. The Emeralds now move to 24-24 on the year and sit in a 3-way tie for 3rd place in the Northwest League. They trail the 1st place Canadians by just 2.5 games.

The Emeralds were able to get a couple of base hits in the first inning but weren't able to cash them in. Grant McCray led things off with a single and with 2-outs Logan Wyatt was able to rip a baseball into the outfield and put runners on the corners with 2-outs. Adrian Sugastey wasn't able to cash in on it as he popped out to end the inning. The first 3 innings of the ballgame were scoreless as the starter for Eugene Eric Silva didn't allow a single base hit and struck out 2 batters over those 3 innings of work.

In the 4th inning Vancouver was able to really open the game up. Peyton Williams crushed a solo home run out to right field to lead off the inning. Williams debuted in last nights ballgame and it was his first base hit as a Vancouver Canadian. After an out from Gabby Martinez, Vancouver rattled off six straight hits including a 2-run home run to give themselves the 5-0 lead in the 4th inning. Eric Silva got pulled from the game and it was a tough outing for him.

Silva has been great this year but this was a tough outing for the young pitcher. He allowed 6 hits, 5 earned runs and struck out 2 batters. He'll look to bounce back next week against the Dust Devils. Seth Lonsway was the relief pitcher after Silva. Lonsway who previously had been starting in the rotation has moved to the bullpen at least temporarily. He pitched 1.2 innings and allowed 3 hits and 1 run while striking out 1 batter. He did inherit a tough situation so it was great to see him work out of some adversity.

The Canadians would put up 2 more runs in the bottom of the 7th off of reliever Joe Kemlage who was in his 2nd inning of work. Kemlage was able to strike out a batter and worked his way out of a tough 7th inning. Reliever Nick Morreale pitched the final frame for Eugene and didn't allow a base hit while also striking out a batter. It was a great showing from the right handed pitcher.

For Eugene, after the two hits in the first inning they were held without a hit until there were 2 outs in the top of the 9th inning. Adrian Sugastey ripped a ball down the 3rd base line for a double to snap a long streak of baseball without a hit. It was good to see the Emeralds fighting in this one even though things hadn't been going there way the entire night.

WIth the loss tonight the Emeralds move back to .500 on the season. It'll be a big game tomorrow for Vancouver with John Michael Bertrand on the bump for the Emeralds. They'll have a chance to go above .500 and continue to stay in the 1st half race in the Northwest League. First pitch is set for 1:05 P.M against the Canadians.
