Eugene Emeralds News Release
EUGENE, Ore. - Donnie Dewees picked a perfect time to hit his first professional home run. The Cubs' second round choice in 2015, Dewees hit a two-run blast to right center in the eighth inning and the Eugene Emeralds defeated Salem-Keizer, 2-1, in front of 3,521 on Thursday night at PK Park.
Eugene (17-18) remained in the hunt for the first half title in the South Division. Hillsboro won at Boise and, at 20-15, are in first place. Eugene would need to win three straight while the Hops would have to drop three straight with the first half of the season ending after Sunday's games. Head-to-head record is the first tiebreaker and winning percentage within the division is the second tiebreaker. Eugene and the Hops split the first half, going 3-3, but the Emeralds would have a better in-division record and claim the second tiebreaker in that case.
Reliever Tyler Peitzmeier (2-0) picked up the win after tossing two scoreless innings. He struck out one and walked one but did not allow a hit in the eighth of ninth. Ryan Halstead (1-1) suffered the loss for Salem-Keizer, spoiling a strong start by Mike Connolly. Connolly allowed just one hit in 6.2 innings with six strikeouts.
Salem-Keizer jumped out to an early lead on a RBI double by Shilo McCall in the second off Eugene starter Kyle Twomey. The Volcanoes couldn't add to their lead off three Eugene relievers.
Eugene had just two hits through the first seven innings but that changed in the eighth. Matt Rose hit a pinch hit single to right to bring Dewees up to bat. The rookie outfielder smashed one deep to right center to score the Ems' only runs of the game.
Notes: Cubs 2015 first-round pick Ian Happ was promoted to South Bend prior to the game.
Up Next: The Emeralds will celebrate Civic Stadium on 70s night at the ballpark on Friday night. Former Emeralds legend Bob Boone will be in attendance and fans are encouraged to submit photos and videos via social media of their memories at Civic Stadium.
