BINGHAMTON, N.Y. - Rookie netminder Brian Elliott outdueled Albany goaltender Michael Leighton on Friday night, stopping 36 shots in regulation and overtime followed by all four shootout attempts to push the Binghamton Senators to a 1-0 shootout victory over the Albany River Rats at the Broome County Veterans Memorial Arena.

The shutout was Elliott's second professional shutout and the 29th in B-Sens history. Leighton also posted a shutout in defeat, his league-leading sixth of the season, but allowed two goals in three attempts in the shootout round.

The B-Sens fought off three minor penalties in the second stanza while Elliott turned away 15 shots to keep it a scoreless tie heading into the third period.

The B-Sens had one power-play opportunity in the third period, a slashing call on Brett Carson, but were unable to convert on the advantage.

Neither team had a clear scoring opportunity until the final 20 seconds of overtime when an Albany player advanced on solo rush towards Elliott. Defenseman Matt Carkner broke up the play with a body block to send the game into the shootout.

After Elliott stopped Jakub Petruzalek on the first shootout attempt, Niko Dimitrakos beat Leighton with a series of moves. Alexander Nikulin converted on Binghamton's second attempt. Elliott turned away attempts from Jeff Hamilton and Kiel McLeod to secure the win.

The B-Sens (30-27-6-4, 70 pts.) leapfrog Bridgeport (33-29-1-2, 69 pts.) into fifth place in the East Division, still four points behind Hershey (34-25-1-5, 74 pts.) for the fourth and final playoff position.

The B-Sens return to home ice tomorrow night against the Rochester Americans. Fans can purchase tickets at the following locations: Broome County Veterans Memorial Arena box office, Binghamton Senators executive office, third floor of the Arena, www.binghamtonsenators.com or by calling (607) 722-7272.
