Bend Elks News Release

Adam Grantham, Garrett Anderson, David Murrillo, and Tanner Ring combined on a 2 hitter, Cullen O'Dwyer hit a 2 run home run, and the Bend Elks defeated the Cowlitz Black Bears 6-2 to defeat from Story Field in Longview, Washington Friday.

The Bend Elks jumped on the scoreboard in the top of the 1st as Chase Fields was hit by a pitch to kick off the ball game, and Seth Spivey hit a rocket into left center field, an RBI triple to score Fields from 1st and give the Elks an early 1-0 lead. After Derek Dixon lined out, Tyler Servais followed with an RBI single into right field as Bend lead 2-0 to open up the ballgame.

Cowlitz (18-16) responded with 2 runs in the bottom of the 1st against Adam Grantham as Ryan Aquilar reached first on a fielder's choice and came around to score on an RBI triple from Devyn Bolasky, and Danny Recio followed with an RBI groundout to tie the game at 2 after the 1st inning.

From then on it was all Bend (21-14) as the Elks responded in the top of the 3rd inning. After Tyler Servais drew a full count walk, Cullen O'Dwyer drove the first pitch over the wall down the right field line for his 3rd home run of the summer as the Elks took a 4-2 lead they would never relinquish.

In the middle innings, the Bend Elks pitching staff took over the game as Grantham settled in after his first inning, and surrendered only 1 hit during the rest of his time. Adam threw 4 and 1/3 innings, giving up 2 runs on 2 hits, walking 3 and striking out 3 before turning the ball over to the Bend Elks bullpen, earning a no decision. Garrett Anderson (2-1) came on in relief and earned credit for the victory, pitching 1 and 2/3, retiring all 5 men he faced, striking out 2.

In the top of the 7th, the Elks added a pair of insurance runs as Tyler Servais came through with an RBI double to score Fields and Seth Spivey, who reached on a walk, came around to score on a passed ball as the Elks made it 6-2, which would prove to be more than enough.

David Murrillo and Tanner Ring pitched the final 3 innings of the game, sitting down the final 9 men of the ballgame. The only blip on the radar came as Kyle Knigge reached on a throwing error by Seth Spivey to kick off the bottom of the 9th inning, but Bolasky grounded into a 1-4-6-3 double play to end the game. The Elks pitching staff faced the minimum number of hitters the final 6 and 1/3 innings, striking out 8 Black Bears during that stretch.

The Elks and Black Bears will resume their 3 game series on Saturday, first pitch scheduled for 6:35 p.m.
