Kalamazoo Kings News Release

A crowd of 3,912 screaming, cheering students and teachers from Mattawan, Paw Paw and Kazoo schools visited Homer Stryker Field on Wednesday, May 29 to watch the Kalamazoo Kings take on the Florence Freedom. The Kings defeated the Freedom 2-0 for their fourth victory of the season. The win improves their record to 4-1.

The students had a great time cheering for the Kings, watching their teachers participate in on field events such as the dizzy bat race, meeting with players and getting autographs after the game.

On the mound, David McWatters dominated going 8 1/3 innings to get his first win of the season. Greg Wilshire came in as relief in the top of the ninth to capture his 3rd save of the year. The Kings scored all their runs in the bottom of the second after catcher Matt Kent and first baseman Steve Hindman led off with singles. After a wild pitch moved up the runners to second and third, second baseman Jim Tully grounded out to first to score Kent. Hindman scored on another wild pitch by pitcher Nate Zettler. Zettler took the loss for the Freedom.

The Kalamazoo Kings host the Florence Freedom on Friday, May 30 at 6:35 p.m. in the final game of the three game series. On Wednesday, June 4 the Kings will hold the second elementary school day of the season for students in the Kalamazoo Public Elementary Schools. The game will begin at 10:00 a.m.
