El Paso Locomotive FC News Release

EL PASO, Texas - El Paso Locomotive (9-6-6, 33 points, West-4) earned three points with a 1-0 victory over Colorado Springs Switchbacks FC at Southwest University Park on Saturday night. Forward Aaron Gomez earned his sixth goal of the season to put Locomotive in the lead. Goalkeeper Evan Newton and his backline earned their eighth clean sheet of the season to stop the high-scoring Switchbacks side.

"They've done good. It's all of us together collectively that we speak about. I thought the subs coming on were fantastic. I thought the guys who started had done a great job," commented Head Coach and Technical Director John Hutchinson. "The boys stayed tough. Credit to them with a clean sheet and we obviously would have liked to score more goals The first 30-35 minutes was some of the best football we've played all year."

From the offset of the match, El Paso Locomotive knocked on the Switchbacks door with shots that went straight into the hands of Switchbacks 'keeper Christian Herrera. Gomez got his first look on goal in the 15th minute with a strike that sent Herrera diving to make the save. Gomez would strike first just minutes later, connecting with a cross from defender Eder Borelli to head away the opening goal in the 18th minute. Going the other way, Defender Martin Payares made a goal line save after a bad pass opened Colorado Springs with a shot. Evan Newton also made saves to stop Switchbacks' Hadji Barry from finding the back of the net, dropping low in the 33rd minute.

The gritty game called for a gutsy performance from El Paso Locomotive as the match heated up. Switchbacks FC tested the Locomotive backline and Newton with an aggressive offensive going into the second half. On the other side, the Locos were just shy of putting the ball into the back of the net through Forward Lucho Solignac and Midfielder Dylan Mares. The game took a turn in the 75th minute, however, as Switchbacks FC's Matthew Mahoney was shown red leaving the Locos with a man advantage up to the 87th minute when Lucho was sent off the field for a second yellow card. The overall performance from Locomotive was enough to keep Switchbacks off the board and claim the three points with its eighth clean sheet of the season.

UP NEXT: El Paso Locomotive travels to Laney Football Stadium to take on Oakland Roots SC in Oakland, California. Kickoff from the Golden State is set for 8:00 p.m. MT on Saturday, July 16 and will be broadcast live on ESPN+.
