Dubuque Fighting Saints News Release
DUBUQUE, IA- Shane Eiserman notched three points, including the game-winning goal, to help the Dubuque Fighting Saints complete the weekend with a 5-2 win over the Green Bay Gamblers Saturday night in front of a sold-out crowd of 3,195 at the Mystique Community Ice Center. Karson Kuhlman also scored a pair of goals in the victory for Dubuque, and Kevin Reich earned his first USHL victory in goal for the Fighting Saints, stopping 18 shots.
After a scoreless first period, the two teams traded goals early in the second period. With Brett Boeing sitting in the penalty box, the Gamblers struck on the powerplay just 32 seconds into the period. Connor Hurley received a pass from Matthew Weis and let a wrist shot go towards the net. The puck was tipped by Best and changed angles, skipping past Reich to make it 1-0.
Only 20 seconds later, Dylan Gambrell scored his first goal since November 27 to tie the game. Jordan Klimek fired a shot towards the Green Bay net. The shot was blocked, but the puck sprung loose to the slot. Gambrell collected the loose puck, spun and shot, beating Gambler netminder Jared Rutledge to make it 1-1.
The Fighting Saints added to its lead late in period two. Eiserman flew up ice down on the left-wing side on a 2-on-1 rush. Eiserman flipped a pass across to Kuhlman who was denied by Rutledge with a great pad save. The puck sat loose in the crease and Kuhlman punched home his rebound for his second goal in as many nights. Jordan Kilmek also picked up one of his two assists on the tally that came at 17:49 and made it 2-1.
Green Bay opened the third period with a quick goal to tie the game. Kevin Irwin was left all alone in front of the goal. Dawson Cook found Irwin streaking in, and the veteran forward walked around Reich and tucked the puck past the goaltender's outstretched left pad to make it 2-2 only 2:21 into the third period.
Much like earlier in the game, it didn't take long for Dubuque to answer. Only 38 seconds later, Eiserman scored the eventual game-winning goal. Alexx Privitera brought the puck out of his own zone and flipped it in the air into the Green Bay zone. Eiserman outraced the Green Bay defender, cutting down the left wing to the goal. Eiserman cut in front and slid the puck through Rutledge's five-hole to give Dubuque a 3-2 lead at 2:49.
Max McHugh would put a damper on Green Bay's comeback attempt with under two minutes to play. Green Bay had several chances to tie the game, including a 2-on-1 rush that Reich denied with his left pad. However, it was Dubuque that scored the next goal. Eiserman factored in again, flipping a saucer pass to the net front that was tipped by McHugh over the Green Bay goaltender. The goal at 18:14 from McHugh was then added to by a Kuhman empty-net tally from Robinson at 19:55 to give Dubuque the victory.
The Fighting Saints outshot the Gamblers 42-20 in the win. Dubuque now sits in sole possession of second place in the USHL's Eastern Conference with 39 points, two ahead of Green Bay. Saturday's game was Dubuque's 30th of the season, marking the mid-way point of the 2013-2014 regular season.
Dubuque hits the road for two games next weekend. The Fighting Saints play a pair of Western Conference clubs, visiting Des Moines on Friday, and Tri-City on Saturday. Both games are at 7:05 p.m. and can be heard on Super Hits 106.1 FM. The Fighting Saints return home on Friday, January 24 to host Cedar Rapids.
