
Eight-Run Second Sparks RiverDogs to 9-7 Win

Salisbury, Md. - The Charleston RiverDogs (33-52, 7-8) scored eight runs in the second inning and survived a late rally to defeat the Delmarva Shorebirds (41-44, 6-9) 9-7 at Joseph P. Riley, Jr. Ballpark on Thursday night.
The Shorebirds took an early lead in the first inning. Mike Mooney ledoff with a single. Then, Brenden Webb hit a gapper to left-center field to score Mooney from first. Two batters later, Jeremy Nowak hit a sharp single to right field to score Webb to give the âBirds a 2-0 lead.
The Shorebirds added to their lead in the second. Michael Rooney reached to open the inning on an error by shortstop Jose Mojica. Then, Garabez Rosa doubled towards the left-center field gap. Mikey Planeta followed with a three-run homer over the left field wall to give the Shorebirds a 5-0 lead. It was his first South Atlantic League home run. He went 654 at-bats with the Shorebirds (2010, 2011) without a homer before hitting his first.
The RiverDogs exploded for eight runs on seven hits in a bottom of the second inning that took 33-minutes to complete. Gary Sanchez ignited the rally with a solo home run to left field, his eighth of the season. Ramon Flores singled, Kelvin De Leon walked and Garrison Lassiter singled to load the bases. Then, Jose Toussen singled to cut the deficit to 5-2. Scott Copeland walked Jose Mojica to force in De Leon. Eduardo Sosa followed with a two-run double to tie the game at 5-5. Anderson Feliz then grounded out to second to produce the go-ahead run. Kevin Mahoney followed with a two-run homer to right field to give the âDogs an 8-5 lead. Copeland was removed with one out in the second after the homer by Mahoney and Tim Adleman recorded the final two outs.
The RiverDogs tacked on a run in the fourth inning on a triple by Lassiter to the corner in right field to increase the lead to 9-5.
The Shorebirds went scoreless between the third and seventh innings before mounting a comeback in the final two innings. In the eighth, Garabez Rosa doubled to open the inning. He moved to third on a groundout by Michael Ohlman and scored on a chopper to third by Michael Rooney. In the ninth, the Shorebirds added a run on an infield single by Flacco to cut the deficit to 9-7. With runners and first and third and one out, closer Kelvin Perez struck out Nowak and catcher Gary Sanchez threw out Ty Kelly stealing third to end the game.
Charleston starter Scottie Allen earned his third win of the season in six innings. He allowed eight hits and five runs, all of which came in the first two innings.
Shorebirds starter Scott Copeland lasted only 1.1 innings and was saddled with the loss. Adleman entered in the second and tossed 2.2 innings and allowed just three hits and a run.
D.J. Ferguson walked the first batter he saw in the fifth and then proceeded to retire nine straight batters over three hitless and scoreless innings. David Walters tossed a scoreless eighth inning.
The Shorebirds and RiverDogs play game two of the series on Friday, July 8 at 7:05 p.m. LHP Jacob Pettit will take the hill for Shorebirds.
