Vermont Mountaineers News Release
MONTPELIER, Vt. - The Upper Valley Nighthawks scored eight runs in the top of the eighth inning to come from behind and beat the Vermont Mountaineers 9-4 in the first matchup between the two in-state rivals this season.
Vermont got excellent starting pitching from Jared Skolnicki (Pittsburgh, Pa./Kent State), who lasted seven innings and allowed one run on five hits. But the Mountaineers put the game in the hands of their relievers in the eighth inning, and the bullpen combined to allow eight runs on five hits, while walking in three runs in during the frame.
Vermont brought in four relievers throughout the eighth inning, none of whom recorded more than two outs. Upper Valley had just two RBI hits in the inning- one from center fielder Anthony Godino (Thornwood, N.Y./Wagner) and another from catcher James McConnon (Springfield, Pa./St. Joseph's). Three runs scored on bases-loaded walks, one run was plated on a bases-loaded hit batter, and another on a wild pitch.
The eight inning began with Vermont leading 4-1, and ended with the Nighthawks up 9-4.
Vermont scored a pair of runs in the first inning to give them a 2-0 lead. Catcher Jesse Forestell (Homewood, Ill./Western Michigan) hit an RBI single that plated Abdel Guadalupe (Davie, Fla./Broward), and Jeffery Scott (Forest, Ind./Bowling Green State) walked and scored on a throwing error by Upper Valley's catcher. The Mountaineers then got a run in the second thanks to a homer by left fielder Chase Grant and another in the fifth via a solo shot by Ryan Hoogerwerf (Allen, Texas/U of Portland).
Upper Valley scored just one run outside of the eighth inning, which came from a solo home run by Godino in the top of the second.
Reliever Ricky DeVito (Staten Island, N.Y./Seton Hall), who failed to record an out, suffered the loss for Vermont. DeVito surrendered five runs (four earned) on two hits and two walks. He falls to 0-1 on the season.
Nighthawks reliever Tanner Schimoeller (Ottawa, Ohio/Cincinnati) was credited with the win after pitching two hitless innings.
The Mountaineers (3-2) will begin a three-game road trip on Wednesday in Mystic, Conn. where they will face the Mystic Schooners for the first time this season. Vermont will travel to Danbury, Conn. to play the Danbury Westerners on Thursday, and face Upper Valley again on the road on Friday. All games can be heard on CBS Sports 1240-AM WSKI or online through The NECBL Broadcast Network.
