LINCOLN, Neb. - Lincoln Stars defenseman Eero Teravainen has signed a professional contract with IFK Helsinki of the Finnish Elite League (Liiga) for the 2018-19 season, HIFK announced today.
"We are very happy for Eero," said Stars GM Jon Hull. "Having players routinely sign and then play professional hockey shows that the level of competition throughout the USHL keeps rising."
Teravainen, 19, played all 60 games with the Stars during the 2017-18 season, tallying four goals and 29 assists for 33 points with 20 power play points and +12 rating. The Helsinki, Finland native led the Stars in power play points, was one of two players with all 60 games played and ranked second on the team in assists while finishing sixth among all USHL players in power play assists (18) as well as seventh and ninth among USHL defensemen in assists and points, respectively.
During his two-year Stars career, the 5-foot-11, 170-pound defenseman totaled six goals and 35 assists for 41 points with four power play goals and two game-winning goals through 96 games. Teravainen was named to the 2017 USHL/NHL Top Prospects Game and ranked on the 2016 NHL Central Scouting Players to Watch List. In addition, his goal during Game 3 of the Western Conference First Round Series against Sioux Falls helped lead the Stars to win that round in the deciding game.
Teravainen will be the second Stars player in Finnish professional hockey, joining alum and co-Helsinki native Waltteri Hopponen ('14-'15), who played for Espoo United of the Mestis League during the 2017-18 season and HPK (Liiga) in the 2016-17 season.
