Frisco Fighters News Release
FRISCO - With a virtually unimpeded quarterback keeper, TJ Edwards put the stamp on a second-half comeback win for the Frisco Fighters, who downed the regional rival Tulsa Oilers, 31-25, to open the new season on Friday.
Edwards, the reigning Indoor Football League MVP, accounted for four ground scores on the night, the last of which ended the Red River Rumble from two yards out for Frisco (1-0).
Edwards' two-yard run 2:19 into the fourth quarter and a three-yard effort with 4:13 to go helped knot the score at 25.
In between those, a Charles Williams sack stifled a march in which Tulsa (0-1) worked inside the Fighters' five-yard line. An illegal defense penalty canceled out an Oilers fumble recovery on the other side of the field the play before Edwards tied matters.
Tulsa reached just outside Frisco's 10-yard line before allowing time to expire in regulation. In overtime, Lionel McConnell's pick in overtime set the stage for the game-winner. McConnell also grabbed the two-point conversion pass that evened the count at 25.
In the opening frame, Edwards opened the scoring on a 15-yard winding run up the middle in which he hurdled a would-be tackler on the way in. Jonathan Nance's seven-yard end-around run score 5:26 later made it 7-6.
A short-yardage plunge by Montero Dubose was aided by Taylor Hawkins' earlier fourth-down end zone interception of Edwards during the next quarter, then Daniel Smith's 16-yard lob to Joshua Crockett followed a missed Bryce Crawford field goal. Crawford pushed another try right shortly before halftime, which the Oilers carried a 19-7 lead into.
Tulsa turned it over on downs at midfield to get the second half underway, allowing Crawford to split the uprights seven plays later. Smith answered by zipping a 10-yard pass to Alexis Rosario on the next series, giving the visitors a 25-10 edge with 2:21 to go in the third.
The Fighters moved to 3-0 all-time against Tulsa with the victory.
