Rio Grande Valley WhiteWings News Release
HARLINGEN- Cristobal Santana's one-out single in the top of the 10th inning plated Felix Molina with the go-ahead run in an 8-6 Edinburg victory against Rio Grande Valley at Harlingen Field Wednesday night.
Santana, who collected his winning hit off Wander Perez (0-1), collected three hits in the game. His first hit, a 2-run double to the opposite field down the first base line in the second inning tied the score, 2-2.
The WhiteWings would score single runs in the second and third off Matison Smith to take a 4-2 lead, but Edinburg followed with 4-run fifth inning, highlighted by RBI singles from Vincent Blue, Carlos Hereaud, Derrek Perren, and Molina, to give the Roadrunners a 6-4 lead.
After scoring a single run in the bottom of the fifth on a two-out Jacinto Cipriota single, the WhiteWings tied the game in the bottom of the sixth on a sacrifice fly from Luis Sumoza.
Paul Koss (2-1) earned the victory in relief for the Roadrunners by throwing 2 2/3 innings of hitless, scoreless relief, and Julio Castro earned his eighth save by retiring the WhiteWings in order.
The victory allowed the Roadrunners (32-20) to remain in first place in the North American Baseball League's Southern Division ahead of the WhiteWings (30-21)
Rio Grande Valley and Edinburg will play in the second game of their two game set tonight at 7:05 p.m., with Celson Polanco pitching against the visiting Roadrunners' Dave Dineli. Polanco leads the NABL with a 1.44 ERA, while Dineli leads the league with 57 strikeouts.
