Roadrunners Drop 'Wings in Extras

HARLINGEN, Texas - The Edinburg Roadrunners scored two runs in the top of the 10th inning to defeat the Rio Grande Valley WhiteWings 8-6 in extra innings Wednesday night at Harlingen Field.

Tied at six, Cristobal Santana and Tim Battle delivered RBI singles giving the Roadrunners (32-20) the lead and eventually the win to keep Edinburg in first place in front of RGV.

The WhiteWings (30-21) jumped out to the early lead in the bottom of the first when Romulo Ruiz hit a single to left and a fielding error allowed Leguim Barroso to score. After moving to third on a wild pitch, Ruiz came in to score on an RBI single by Mario Mercedes that made it 2-0.

Edinburg answered back in the top of the second against Coleman Stephens. Cristobal Santana tied the game at two with a two-run double that allowed Carlos Hereaud and Derek Perren to score.

After RGV scored single runs in the bottom of the second and third innings, the Roadrunners batted around in the top of the fifth. Vincent Blue, Hereaud, Perren, and Felix Molina each delivered RBI singles giving Edinburg the 6-4 advantage.

Jacinto Cipriota gave the WhiteWings another run with an RBI single in the bottom of the sixth that made it 6-5 Roadrunners.

A sacrifice fly by Luis Sumoza in the bottom of the sixth allowed Ruiz to score tying the game at six.

In the top of the 10th and the game tied at six, Molina reached on a single to right field and then moved to third on an errant pick-off throw. Santana followed with an RBI single to left field allowing Molina to score. After an out and a walk to Pascual Del Real, Tim Battle hit an RBI single that scored Santana pushing the Roadrunners lead 8-6.

Julio Castro picked up his eighth save of the season after pitching a perfect bottom of the 10th giving Edinburg the 8-6 victory.

Paul Koss (2-1) who pitched two and two-third innings and did not allow a run or a hit with four strikeouts got the win.

The Roadrunners and WhiteWings will continue their series Thursday night at Harlingen Field. Dave Dinelli (2-5) is expected to face Celson Polanco (6-2) with the first pitch scheduled for 7:05 p.m.
