Edenton Steamers News Release
EDENTON, N.C - Nick Miller and Chase Harris both provided solo home runs and Adam Bray pitched five scoreless innings as Edenton (40-11, 20-5) ended the 2013 regular season with a 2-1 win over the Peninsula Pilots (33-22, 19-9) on Monday night at Historic Hicks Field.
The regular season finale pitted the Edenton Steamers against their East Division rival Peninsula Pilots for the 12th time in 2013.
Adam Bray (South Dakota State University) got the nod for the seventh time during the summer; he squared off against TJ Rinoski of the Pilots.
Nick Miller (University of Northern Colorado), fresh off being awarded the Gieseke Gold Award, smashed a home run over the storage shed in straightaway centerfield for his fifth home run of the season and 19th RBI in the bottom of the second inning, the long ball gave Edenton a 1-0 lead.
Chase Harris (University of New Mexico), in the bottom of the third inning, followed Miller with a solo home run of his own over the high wall down the left field line for a 2-0 Steamer lead. It was Harris's second home run of the season and 13th RBI of the summer.
Bray gave up a lead-off single to the very first batter he faced in the ball game, Patrick Grady and then not another one during his five innings on the mound. Bray allowed no runs on one hit; he walked two and struck out five in the win, improving to 5-2 on the season.
Jeremy Bales (Lee University) and Beau Beaudreau (Flagler College) combined for a scoreless sixth inning before Rohn Pierce (Canisius College) entered and struck out the Peninsula side in the seventh inning.
In the top of the eighth Peninsula managed to scrape one run through against Andrew Nelson (St.
Catharine College). The first three men to come to the plate all reached base, one by way of a walk, one on a single and finally one on an error to load the bases. After Nelson struck out Zach Lopes for the first out he walked Bradon Reitano to push home Taylor Urps for the Pilots first run of the game. Nelson then struck out the next two hitters to end the inning.
Jake McCoy (College of the Desert) entered in the ninth inning and allowed a two out double to Tyler Urps but that was it as he got Brett Blevins to ground out to second base to end the ball game. McCoy picked up his 11th save of the season, while Rinoski took the loss, falling to 4-3 on the season.
The win improved Edenton's final record to 40-11 on the season and 20-5 in the second half. Peninsula wrapped up 2013 33-22 overall and 19-9 in the second half. The Steamers won the season series with a record of 9-3 against their East Division rivals. Edenton's first round opponent will be the Fayetteville SwampDogs, beginning on Wednesday, August 7th in Fayetteville.
