Edenton Steamers News Release
ASHEBORO, N.C - The Asheboro Copperheads showed why they have the best ERA in the Coastal Plain League, shutting out the Edenton Steamers 2-0 at McCrary Park on Sunday night.
Edenton travelled to Asheboro to take on the Copperheads for the second time in 2013, in what was a match-up of the top team in each division of the Coastal Plain League.
The game itself was meaningless as far as the standings are concerned as each squad, the Steamers and the Copperheads had already clinched the top seed on each side of the bracket as well as the second-half division titles.
David St. Lawrence (Brown University) made his eighth start of 2013, he faced off against Tyler Poole.
Asheboro, in the bottom of the first, got a base runner in the form of Bobby Ison by way of the walk. Ison moved to second on a fielder's choice, and third on a groundout by Oscar Sanay.
Luke Tendler, battling for the league lead in batting average, lined an RBI single to score Ison and give Asheboro a 1-0 lead.
After a lead-off single by Adam Kirsch in the top of the second, Poole retired the next eight Steamers in order until a two-out walk to Kirsch in the top of the fourth.
Chase Harris (University of New Mexico) reached on a bunt single in the seventh inning for Edenton's second hit of the night. That was the offense for the Steamers along with three walks and a hit batsman. Poole was dominate in his five innings of work, allowing one hit and walking three while adding a strikeout. Poole earned his first win of the season, improving to 1-3.
Asheboro picked up an insurance run in the bottom of the fourth inning against St. Lawrence. With two outs and a runner on first base, Ryan Karl lined an RBI double into the left-center field gap for a 2-0 Copperhead lead.
That was enough for Dylan Dickens, the Copperheads closer, who pitched two scoreless innings in relief for his ninth save of the season.
St. Lawrence took the loss allowing six hits and two runs on three walks and he struck out one batter. He is now 3-2 on the season.
In what could have been a preview of the Petitt Cup Championship series later this month Edenton was decidedly beaten for the second time this summer by the Copperheads. Edenton, in 18 innings against Asheboro, has failed to score a run this season.
With the loss the Steamers fall to 39-11 overall and 19-5 in the second half while Asheboro improves to 35-17 overall and 17-7 in the second half with the win. Edenon travels home and will finish the 2013 regular season slate on Monday against the Peninsula Pilots at Historic Hicks Field.
The Edenton Steamers are a proud member of the Coastal Plain League, the nation's hottest summer collegiate baseball league.
