Edenton Dealt a Pair of Aces

May 19, 2014 - Coastal Plain League (Coastal Plain)
Edenton Steamers News Release

EDENTON, N.C.- The Edenton Steamers of the Coastal Plain League announce today the signing of two NAIA pitchers from Peru State College in Peru, Nebraska. We welcome Manny Arciniega and Miguel Navarro as the newest members of the 2014 Teal and Black.

Navarro is a 5-10, 160-pound junior and was the number-one starting pitcher this spring for the Peru State Bobcats, who went 32-18 this year and were the third seed in the Heart of America Athletic Conference Tournament.

He did not pitch last summer after transferring from Mount San Jacinto College (CA), where he played his first two years of college ball. Navarro did spend his freshman summer in 2012 in the New York Collegiate League with the Utica Brewers; there he made eight starts and went 4-1 with a 2.77 ERA and 1.23 WHIP over 53 innings while posting 66 strikeouts to 21 walks.

Navarro garnered first-team all-conference honors this spring for the Bobcats after completing eight of his 12 starts with two shutouts and two saves in his lone relief outings; In over 81 innings he posted an 8-3 ledger with a 2.00 ERA, .86 WHIP, .173 batting average against and .215 opponent slugging along with 79 strikeouts and 21 bases on balls.

Arciniega is a 5-9, 145-pound junior and was the number-two starter for the Bobcats in 2014. Arciniega and Navarro anchored a Peru State staff that had the best team ERA (3.73) in the HAAC this season.

Arciniega spent last summer playing for the Riverside Rebels in the Southern California Collegiate Baseball League. He had a strong campaign there, pitching 37 innings and posting a 1.98 ERA, .70 WHIP, fanning 42 with only 7 walks. The Hemet, CA native was voted a midseason SCCBL all-star for his efforts.

A former ace at San Bernardino Valley College (CA), Arciniega made a successful transition to the NAIA this spring with the Bobcats, hurling 51 innings across eight starts, completing three with one shutout; he posted a 2.82 ERA, 1.08 WHIP, .233 batting average against with 42 strikeouts to 13 walks.

While undersized, Navarro and Arciniega combine solid to plus stuff with equal command of quality three-pitch mixes. They feature quick arms and a track record of success and durability that should lead to both making a significant impact on the Clams' staff this summer.
