Wilmington Sharks News Release
In their first meeting of the summer, the Wilmington Sharks (21-21, 7-9) fell to the Peninsula Pilots (21-19, 6-9) by a score of 4-3 on Monday night at Buck Hardee Field in Wilmington. Monday's game was another flip-flopping contest. From the third through the sixth, the lead would change in every half inning.
Peninsula starting pitcher Taylor Edens improved to 7-1 on the season, going seven strong innings, allowing three runs on nine hits, striking out two and walking none.
Wilmington picked up an early 2-0 advantage using two runs in the third inning. Andy Austin knocked a single to get the Sharks going, and singles by Hayes Nelson, Kennard McDowell, and Nick Rotola would bring in a run. Rotola collected an RBI on a ball that was an inch from being a grand slam. Rotola finished the evening 3-5 with 2 RBIs. Nelson came across to score the second run on a backside grounder by Brett Smith.
John Parke shoulders the loss, allowing four runs on seven hits during his five innings of work. He struck out two and walked two. Reed Scott, Kevin Boswick, and Joe Bialkowski pitched the end of the ballgame, allowing one hit and spreading seven strikeouts across them - with four belonging to Scott. From the seventh to the ninth, the Sharks bullpen sat down eight consecutive Pilots.
Wilmington had a chance in the bottom of the ninth inning, following Nelson's leadoff double - his third hit of the ballgame. Kennard McDowell's second sacrifice bunt of the night moved Nelson up to third before Robbie Hiser settled in to sit the next two Sharks down in order.
The Wilmington Sharks hit the road Tuesday and Wednesday to face the Forest City Owls and the High-Point Thomasville Hi-Toms of CPL West before returning back to The Shark Tank on Thursday to host the SwampDogs for their final matchup of the regular season.
