Fayetteville SwampDogs News Release
FAYETTEVILLE, N.C. - The Fayetteville SwampDogs broke a season-long six-game losing streak and defeated the Morehead City Marlins 10-4 Monday night at J.P. Riddle Stadium.
The SwampDogs were behind the eight ball early as starter Joey Lucchesi (Jr./Southeast Missouri) struggled with command in the first inning, walking two and allowing three runs to come in to score. He would settle down from that point on, striking out seven and walking just two more in his final three innings of work.
Meanwhile the 'Dogs chipped away with two runs in the bottom of the second off of Marlins starter Daniel McCrary courtesy of a two-out, two-run single from third baseman Ki-Jana Madden (Fr./Spartanburg Methodist) and knotted the score at three when second baseman Branden Boggetto (Jr./Southeast Missouri) singled to drive home first baseman Austin Upshaw (Fr./Kennesaw State).
The Marlins briefly took a 4-3 lead in the top of the sixth when left fielder Matt Collins singled off reliever Zach McKay (Soph./The Citadel) to drive home shortstop Justin Weigle.
The game would change in the bottom of the seventh, when Sky Overton (Soph./Furman) led off with a home run off of Marlins reliever Keller Bradford, then back to back doubles from CJ Needam (Jr./Mount Olive) and Boggetto gave the 'Dogs a 5-4 lead. The offense exploded for five runs in bottom of the eighth inning to break the score open and seal the 10-4 win.
Nolan Mullen (Soph./Furman) got the win to improve to 1-1 on the season after throwing the final three innings in relief. Bradford got the loss for Morehead City, falling 1-3.
The SwampDogs (16-27) are off Tuesday before returning home Wednesday to face the Peninsula Pilots on Disney/Pixar Night. Reserve your tickets now by contacting the SwampDogs ticket office at 910-426-5900!
