Steelheads post strong start to season-long road trip
Entering today's Presidents' Day matinee at Utah, the Idaho Steelheads have won three straight games to create some separation between their pursuers in the Mountain Division standings. The Steelheads are 28-17-7 for 63 points and have a six-point lead on fourth-place Alaska and an eight-point advantage on the Grizzlies and Missouri.
Idaho opened its three-game series at Utah on Friday, scoring the game's first six goals, including a four-goal outburst in the first period, on its way to an 8-2 win. Joe Basaraba led the way with four points (2g-2a) while six other Steelheads notched multi-point efforts in the win. Landon Bow stopped 31 of the 33 shots he faced to pick up the win in goal.
On Saturday, Bryce Van Brabant scored a pair of goals in the Steelheads' 3-2 shootout win. Jefferson Dahl scored the only goal in the shootout to clinch the victory with Bow turning aside 29 shots in regulation and overtime and stopping all three of Utah's shootout attempts.
Anthony Luciani leads Idaho on the season with 23 goals and 51 points. Dahl ranks second on the team with 47 points (14g-33a) while Basaraba and Will Merchant are tied for second with 17 goals each. Merchant has scored 10 of his 17 goals on the power play to rank second among ECHL rookies, and fourth overall in the league, in that category. Joe Faust is tied for third among defensemen with 12 goals.
Bow has appeared in 17 games for the Steelheads this season, posting a 12-3-2 record with a 2.44 goals-against average and a .924 save percentage.
The Steelheads continue their season-long eight-game road trip this week, wrapping up the three-game series at Utah today before heading to Missouri for games on Friday and Saturday.
Costello records third-straight 100-point season
Allen's Chad Costello reached the 100-point plateau for the third consecutive season on Sunday against Rapid City. The two-time defending ECHL scoring champion once again leads the league this season with 100 points (28g-72a) in 56 games.
Costello is just the third player in the ECHL's 29-year history to post three consecutive seasons of at least 100 points. He joins John Spoltore, a 2014 inductee into the ECHL Hall of Fame, who posted at least 100 points from 1997-98 through 1999-00 with Louisiana, and Trevor Jobe, who reached the century mark with Nashville and Richmond from 1990-91 through 1992-93.
Costello's three seasons of 100 or more points is tied for the second most in league history with Jobe and 2015 ECHL Hall of Fame inductee Darren Colbourne (1991-92, 1993-94 and 1996-97). Spoltore holds the league record with four 100-point seasons.
