EASTER PARADE OF HITS FOR 66ERS AS WITHROW SHUTS DOWN QUAKES
SAN BERNARDINO, CA - Chris Withrow tossed five hitless innings and the Inland Empire 66ers earned a series split with the visiting Rancho Cucamonga Quakes with a 7-2 win at Arrowhead Credit Union Park on Easter Sunday.
Withrow (1-0), the Los Angeles Dodgers first-round pick in 2007, had an impressive debut, pitching five hitless innings, striking out six and walking two. Thomas Melgarejo kept the no-hit bid game going through seven innings before allowing a leadoff double to Jay Brossman in the eighth.
The 66ers (2-2) scored early and often, opening up with two runs in the first. Trayvon Robinson was plunked to lead off the game and stole second to get into scoring position. Preston Mattingly took full advantage, driving in Robinson with a double to left off Quakes starter and Fontana native Robert Fish (0-1). Mattingly came around to score on an RBI groundout from Tommy Giles to give the 66ers an early 2-0 lead.
Inland Empire's offense got the spark they were looking for in the series, plating seven runs on nine hits. Pedro Baez drove in three of those runs in the sixth with a three-run big fly to center off Jordon Towns. Garett Green added a solo home run in the fifth for his first hit of the season. Eduardo Perez, who had just just one triple in 2008, recorded a pair of three-baggers, one in the first and another in the seventh.
It wasn't until the ninth inning that the Quakes (2-2) would get on the scoreboard. Matt Sweeney brought in Abel Nieves with a line-drive double to center off Daigoro Rondon. The next batter, Jeremy Moore laced a single to center to score Sweeney.
The 66ers will now hit the road for the first time this season, heading out to Lancaster to face the JetHawks. Tim Sexton gets the call for the 66ers while David Duncan takes the mound for the JetHawks. Inland Empire will return to Arrowhead Credit Union Park on Monday, April 20th to face those same Lancaster JetHawks at 7:05 PM. That will be the first Kid's Eat Free Monday where fans will receive a voucher for a hot dog, soda and chips with the purchase of a child's ticket.
