Misc. Notes
Earthquakes Win at PAL Stadium
The San Jose Earthquakes beat El Sueño de tu Vida All-Stars 6-0 last Friday night at PAL Stadium. The Quakes got three goals in each half to put away the local all-stars. Antonio Ribeiro and guest player Ismael Ibarra both scored a pair of goals, while Quincy Amarikwa and Simon Elliott added a goal each. Andrew Weber and Mike Graczyk combined to post the shutout. The Quakes applied plenty of early pressure, as Ryan Johnson had a chance in the fifth minute and his effort was thwarted by goalkeeper Mario Obeso. Johnson had another quality opportunity three minutes later, as his full volley effort from just inside the area flew inches wide. San Jose kept the pressure on, and the chances kept piling up, until they finally broke through in the 24th minute as Shea Salinas picked out Amarikwa at the back post and his diving header left Obeso with no chance. Salinas figured in the Quakes' second goal after service from Mike Zaher found him at the back post and his pass picked out Elliott at the penalty spot. Elliott he slotted it home in the 34th minute to double San Jose's lead. Ribeiro scored on a full volley in the 38th minute of play after a nice Chris Wondolowski cross found Johnson, and his header fell to Ribeiro who blasted in his first in a San Jose uniform. San Jose opened the second half like they finished the first, attacking in waves. Second half substitute Darren Huckerby served a cross in that picked out Johnson, whose header flicked just wide of the target. Ribeiro found the net again, this time on a corner kick, as Huckerby's inswinger found Johnson, and it fell right to Ribeiro to make it 4-0. Guest player Ismael Ibarra added the fifth as he chipped the goalkeeper in the 57th minute after a nice long ball from Amarikwa. He tallied his second with three minutes remaining, as Ribeiro's pass found him for a tap-in.
C.D. Aguila
Club Deportivo Aguila is one of El Salvador's all-time winningest teams, having captured 15 first division championships since its founding in 1926. They won their first title in 1959 and their most recent championship came in 2006. They also were the first Salvadoran team to win the CONCACAF Championship when it captured that title in 1976. The club is located in San Miguel. The match marks the second straight year the Earthquakes will play a team from El Salvador. They defeated CD FAS 2-1 on Oct. 7, 2008 at Buck Shaw Stadium. San Jose is now 5-8-5 all-time against international opponents in friendly matches, including their 4-0 victory over the Honduran Olympic Team and the win against FAS last season.
Sanchez and Alvarez With El Salvador
San Jose Earthquakes midfielders Arturo Alvarez and Ramon Sanchez both started for El Salvador in a 2-1 loss to the United States in World Cup qualifying on Sept. 5 at Rio Tinto Stadium in Sandy, Utah. Sanchez captained the squad and played 90 minutes, while Alvarez left the game in the 50th minute. The Salvadorans now play host to Costa Rica on Wednesday, Sept. 9 at Estadio Cuscatlan in San Salvador at 6 p.m. PT. Alvarez made his debut for El Salvador on Aug. 12 against Trinidad and Tobago in a qualifying match. Sanchez, who is the captain for El Salvador, also played against Trinidad and Tobago and has appeared in over 50 matches for El Salvador and has scored two goals. He has played in every World Cup qualifier for El Salvador for the 2010 World Cup.
Glen Starts for Trinidad
Forward Cornell Glen started and played 90 minutes for Trinidad and Tobago on Sept. 5 in a World Cup qualifying match in San Pedro Sula, Honduras. T&T fell 4-1 to Honduras in the match, leaving them with five points in qualifying with three matches to go. Glen and the Soca Warriors host the United States on Wednesday, September 9 at Hasely Crawford Stadium in Port of Spain, Trinidad. The game kicks off at 4 p.m. PT and will air live on ESPN Classic and Galavision. Glen has appeared in 58 matches for T&T and has scored 23 goals for his country.
Elliott Plays a Half then Takes Off
Earthquakes midfielder Simon Elliott played the first 45 minutes of the team's friendly match against El Sueño de tu Vida All-Stars on Sept. 4 and scored a goal. At halftime, he went to San Jose International Airport and caught a flight for New Zealand's match in Amman, Jordan. Elliott will represent the All Whites for their international friendly against Jordan on Wednesday, Sept. 9 in Amman. Elliott has scored eight international goals in his 64 appearances for New Zealand. His last call-up to his national side saw him play six matches in June, including three in the Confederations Cup in South Africa.
Two Assists in Two Games for Corrales
Ramiro Corrales, playing left back on Aug. 29 against the New England Revolution, notched his second assist in as many games. On Aug. 22 at home, Corrales whipped in a cross that was headed home by Chris Wondolowski to knock of Kansas City in stoppage time. He provided another good service for Ramon Sanchez to head past Matt Reis to pull a goal back in the 2-1 defeat at Gillette Stadium on Aug. 29. He is now 10th all-time in team history in assists with 19, one behind Ian Russell for ninth place.
Cannon Passes the 1100 Mark in Career Saves
Earthquakes goalkeeper Joe Cannon made six saves on Aug. 29 against the New England Revolution, which sent him over 1,100 in his career (now has 1,101). He now ranks him third all-time in MLS history, behind Kevin Hartman and Tony Meola.
