San Jose Earthquakes News Release


The San Jose Earthquakes fell to the New York Red Bulls 3-1 in their 2022 season opener at PayPal Park on Saturday. Chofis scored the lone goal for San Jose, while Cristian Espinoza tallied an assist. Midfielders Jamiro Monteiro and Jan Gregus and defender Francisco Calvo all made their Earthquakes debut.

The Earthquakes are now preparing to host the Columbus Crew on Saturday, March 5, presented by Fastmetrics. Kickoff from PayPal Park is set for 2:30 p.m. PT and the match will be broadcast on NBC Sports California, KNBR 1050 and KZSF 1370.

Finding the Net

Midfielder Chofis scored his first goal of the season and 13th of his MLS career. It was his first professional goal scored via header. Since July 17, 2021, he has scored 11 goals, tied for sixth most in MLS during that span.

Helping Hand

Midfielder Cristian Espinoza tallied his first assist of the season and 31st of his MLS career. With his assist, Espinoza ranks third among all MLS players in assists since the start of the 2019 season (Maxi Moralez - 35, Carles Gil - 34).

Player Milestones

Goalkeeper JT Marcinkowski and forward Jeremy Ebobisse made their 50th and 100th MLS appearances, respectively.

A look back on important moments in Quakes history that took place during the week of Feb. 28 - March 6

March 2, 2009 - Acquired defender Chris Leitch

The Earthquakes acquired defender Chris Leitch from the New York Red Bulls in exchange for allocation money and an international roster slot. Leitch spent three seasons with the Quakes before retiring in 2011, appearing in 58 matches and tallying eight assists. He was the Earthquakes Defensive Player of the Year in 2009 and helped the Quakes reach the conference final in 2010. He currently serves as the club's General Manager.

ACADEMY UPDATE

The Quakes Academy played last Saturday, with the Boys U13s (W 2-0) and U14s (W 2-0) defeating Diablo Valley, while the U15s (L 0-1) and the U17s (T 1-1) playing the Portland Timbers.

The Academy U13s and U14s will next face Santa Rosa on Saturday, March 5, while the U15s and U17s play Seattle Sounders FC on Sunday, March 6. To stay updated on the Quakes Academy, follow their social media accounts on Facebook , Instagram and Twitter .
