San Jose Earthquakes News Release
SAN JOSE, Calif. - The San Jose Earthquakes announced today that the club has transferred defender Marcos Lopez to Feyenoord of the Dutch Eredivisie for an undisclosed club-record fee.
"Marcos has been a key player for us for the past three and a half years, but this is a move we felt was important to make for many reasons," said Earthquakes General Manager Chris Leitch. "With an expiring contract and his desire to compete in Europe, this transfer helps him achieve his personal goals with a top club in the Netherlands and allows us to bring in significant compensation for his departure. We sincerely appreciate all of Marcos' efforts during his time in San Jose and are excited for him to receive this opportunity. We'll be rooting for his success and continued growth with Feyenoord."
Lopez, 22, joined San Jose ahead of the 2019 season at 19 years of age. He has since made 69 appearances, including 58 starts, and tallied four goals and six assists. In 2022, Lopez made 16 starts in 17 total appearances and scored one goal.
The native of Callao, Peru also developed into an important player for the Peru National Team during his time with the Earthquakes. Lopez has made 20 appearances for Peru and helped his nation come within one interconfederation playoff win of qualifying for the 2022 FIFA World Cup.
