San Jose Earthquakes News Release
San Jose, Calif. (Monday, July 12, 2004) - The San Jose Earthquakes will host Diabetes Awareness Day on Saturday, July 17 at 1:00 p.m. PT when the Quakes face the Colorado Rapids at Spartan Stadium. Proceeds from special promotions for and during the July 17 match will benefit the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation (JDRF) in their fight to find a cure for children who suffer from diabetes.
Diabetes Awareness Day at the Earthquakes vs. Rapids game will help raise funds for JDRF through a raffle and fundraiser tickets. A table will be set up at Spartan Stadium to raffle off an Earthquakes team jersey. All proceeds from raffle ticket sales, which may be purchased for two dollars each, three for five dollars, or eight for 10 dollars, will benefit JDRF.
Fundraiser game tickets are available to the public for $15 each, with partial
proceeds also going towards JDRF. In order for JDRF to receive ticket proceeds from
this event, tickets must be ordered by calling Jenny Tsong at the Earthquakes (408)
288-2644 and referencing JDRF or visiting www.jdrfgreaterbay.org
In addition to raising funds towards diabetes research, the day serves to help raise
awareness about the symptoms for Type 1 diabetes. JDRF, the leading charitable funder and advocate of juvenile (type 1) diabetes
research worldwide, was founded in 1970 by the parents of children with juvenile
diabetes. Since its inception, JDRF has provided more than $800 million in direct
funding to diabetes research, including more than $85 million in FY2004. More than
80 percent of JDRF's expenditures directly support research and research-related
education. In FY2004, JDRF funded 500 centers, grants and fellowships in 19
countries. JDRF's mission is constant: to find a cure for diabetes and its
complications through the support of research. For more information, visit the JDRF
web site at www.jdrf.org or call (800) 533-CURE. Founded in 1978, the Greater Bay Area Chapter of JDRF is one of the largest
fundraising Chapters in the nation, contributing more than $5 million to diabetes
research annually. With over 10,000 Bay Area supporters, the Greater Bay Area
Chapter provides a significant amount of funding to support local research grants at
Stanford University and the University of California at San Francisco. For more
