San Jose Earthquakes News Release

SANTA CLARA, Calif. - The San Jose Earthquakes kept their CONCACAF Champions League hopes alive with a 3-0 rout of the Montreal Impact at Buck Shaw Stadium on Tuesday.

With the win, San Jose will now await the result of Montreal's match against CD Heredia at Saputo Stadium on Tuesday, Sept. 24. The Earthquakes can advance to the next stage with an Impact win coupled with a San Jose win against CD Heredia on Wednesday, Oct. 23 at Buck Shaw Stadium. Should all teams finish with six points, the tiebreaker would be total goal differential.

The Earthquakes found the net first with Chris Wondolowski finishing from close range in the 21st minute. Dan Gargan initiated the sequence with a long throw to Steven Lenhart. San Jose's target man flicked a pass to Wondolowski on the doorstep, allowing the club's leading scorer to tap his shot past Montreal goalkeeper Evan Bush.

Marvin Chavez doubled the Quakes' lead in the 56th minute with a rocket half volley from the top of the area. The Impact attempted to clear a cross from their box, but the ball bounced to Chavez near the edge of the area and the Honduran teed off to make it 2-0.

Shea Salinas capped the scoring with a brilliant individual effort in the 84th minute. Salinas burst past his defender and blasted a shot from a tight angle near the endline for his first career CCL goal.

San Jose's next MLS match comes on Saturday, Sept. 21 against Real Salt Lake at Rio Tinto Stadium in Sandy, Utah. Kickoff for that game is 6 p.m. PT on Comcast SportsNet California, 1590 KLIV and 1370 KZSF.
