Pittsfield Colonials News Release
The Pittsfield Colonials scored nine times in the first three innings and got strong relief pitching from Tim Stronach en route to their third straight win, a 9-6 victory over the Rockland Boulders.
For the third time in four games, the Colonials jumped out of the gates strong, scoring a run in the bottom of the first when Jerod Edmondson led off with a single, followed by a Matt Nandin double, moving Edmondson to third. Danny Bomback came to the plate and stroked a single to center, scoring Edmondson for the early 1-0 Pittsfield lead.
The Colonials pulled momentum firmly on their side in the second when after working out of a bases loaded situation in the top half of the frame, Pittsfield posted four runs in the bottom of the inning, ignited by a bases loaded single by Quentin Davis that scored Johnny Welch and Billy Mottram who had singled and doubled to lead off the frame. Two batters later, with Chris Torres who had walked on third and Davis on second, Matt Nandin reached on an infield single to score Torres. An overthrow by Rockland shortstop, Bridger Hunt in his attempt to get Nandin at first allowed Davis to score also, putting the Colonials up 5-0.
Rockland tallied their first two runs of the game in the third inning on a single by John Fitzpatrick and a fielder's choice by Norm Hutchins. Pittsfield went back on the attack in the bottom of the inning, plating four runs for the second straight frame. The rally was keyed by a two-run double by Edmondson, Nandin's second double of the contest and a Bomback single as the Colonials posted a 9-2 advantage.
A pair of runs each in the fourth and sixth made a game of things, but Rockland was shut down over the final three innings by Pittsfield reliever Tim Stronach (1-0) who went five innings overall in earning his first win since August 28, 2009 while pitching for the St. Lucie Mets. Pitching in front of several members of friends and family, the Haverhill native allowed two runs on seven hits, walking one and striking out five in the victory. John Muller (0-1) suffered the loss for the Boulders.
On the offensive end, the Colonials banged out a season-high 16 hits, including four from Jerod Edmondson. Danny Bomback also reached base four times with two hits and a pair of walks. Billy Mottram and Matt Nandin each had three hits for Pittsfield. Edmondson, Bomback, Nandin and Quentin Davis each drove in two runs.
Game two of the series comes up on Monday with Pat Moran taking the hill for Pittsfield against Casey Hodges for Rockland. First pitch is set for 2:00 p.m. with the pregame show on 89.7 WTBR set to kick off at 1:40. After the game, fans are invited to stick around for a performance by "One Sharp Marriage", which features the fourth-rated husband and wife knife throwing team in the country.
