Wachusett Dirt Dawgs News Release
LEOMINSTER, Mass. (Sunday, June, 9, 2013) Defense wins championships. Unfortunately the Wachusett Dirt Dawgs learned that lesson the hard way, as three first inning errors allowed the Pittsfield Suns to score four runs. The Suns never looked back, taking the game 13-0.
The Suns' (2-0) starting pitcher, Aaron Plunkett (UMass Amherst) had five shutout innings of work, allowing only two hits and striking out three. Plunkett earned the win on the night.
The Pittsfield bats were on fire all night, as they scored runs in five of the nine innings and tallied 16 hits.
The Suns offense was led by Ryan Detirich (Duke University) and Frank Crinella (Merrimack College). Detirich went 2-for-5 on the night, hitting a grand slam in the top of the 8th, pushing the Suns' lead to 12-0.
Crinella went 2-for-4 on the night and notched 3 RBIs. He had a solo shot in the top frame of the 8th.
The Dirt Dawgs (1-3) had multiple chances on the night, but were unable to capitalize. They left the bases loaded twice throughout the game, once in the bottom of the 1st and also in the bottom of the 7th. They were held to four hits on the evening.
Michael Marshall (Bryant University) got the start for Wachusett, going four full innings, allowing only three hits. He struck out two, but didn't get much help from his defense, as the Dirt Dawgs committed four errors on the night.
A bright spot for the Dirt Dawgs offense was Derek Lowe (William & Mary) who drew three walks on the night.
The Dirt Dawgs return to action on Tuesday, June 11 at home against the North Shore Navigators.
