Hickory Crawdads News Release

Greensboro, NC - First inning home runs by Joey Gallo and Lewis Brinson gave the Hickory Crawdads an early 4-0 lead Tuesday night, but the Greensboro Grasshoppers rallied for eight unanswered tallies to come from behind and give the 'Dads a 9-5 loss.

Gallo got the 'Dads night off to a good start with a 2-out, solo homer over the wall in left-center in the top of the 1st. The long ball was the 32nd of the year for the Hickory third baseman, tying him with 2004 Crawdad Jon Benick for the team's single-season record. An RBI double from Nomar Mazara and a 2-run home run by Brinson pushed the 'Dads advantage to 4-0 before the opening inning concluded.

The Crawdads stayed in control through the 4th inning, with Greensboro scoring a single run in the bottom of the 2nd before an RBI double from Kevin Torres in the top of the 4th put the 'Dads ahead 5-1. That would be the last run for the 'Dads in the game, while the Grasshoppers began an 8-0 rally that stretched from the 5th through the 8th.

The 'Hoppers got to Crawdads starting pitcher Frank Lopez for a run in the fifth, reliever Sam Stafford for one in the 6th and two in the seventh, and finally reliever Joe Burns for 4 runs in the 8th to turn what was a 4-run lead for the 'Dads into a 9-5 deficit.

Greensboro bullpen arm Blake Logan (2-6) earned the win for shutting down the Crawdads with 6 strikeouts over the final three innings of the game. Burns (4-5) took the loss for the 'Dads after giving up four runs on four hits during his two innings of relief. Lopez ended with a no-decision for Hickory, with two runs allowed on six hits, three walks and 7 Ks over 5 IP.

Gallo ended the night 1-4 with his record-tying dinger and a walk. Brinson finished 2-3 with his 2-run homer, a walk, a stolen base and a run. Nick Williams went 2-5, while also tying a Hickory record with his 12th triple of the season.

The loss is the 5th straight for the Crawdads and drops them to 34-30 in the second half, while the Grasshoppers improve to 29-34. The 'Dads will look to get back in the win column on Wednesday, with game two of their 3-game series in Greensboro scheduled for 7:00 pm.
