RHP Tony Bucciferro (3-4, 2.51) vs. LHP Bennett Parry (2-2, 3.51)
Today's Preview: The Intimidators (A, White Sox) can clinch a fifth straight series win today as they play Game 2 of this 3-game series against the Shorebirds (A, Orioles). Kannapolis has won 12 of its last 14 games and today sends Tony Bucciferro to the hill to face Delmarva's Bennett Parry in a rematch of a Aug. 11 pitching match up. That day, Parry led the Shorebirds to a blanking of the Intimidators as Bucciferro suffered his only loss since returning to the SAL from the Appalachian League on July 18. Also today, outfielder Jacob May will try to set a new season-long hitting streak for Kannapolis as he brings a 14-game streak into the game.
Intimidating Starter: Tony Bucciferro, 23, makes his 11th start of the year at Class A and his second against Delmarva. He is coming off consecutive scoreless outings, including a win Aug. 22 against Savannah in which he struck out a career-high 10 hitters over 7.0 innings. He is now 3-2 with a 1.00 ERA (5 ER/45 IP) with 49 strikeouts and four walks in seven starts since returning to Kannapolis July 18 from Advanced Rookie Bristol. Since July 20, his 1.00 ERA is second-best in the SAL, behind Hagerstown's Brett Mooneyham (0.65). Bucciferro is in his third stint with Kannapolis, after appearing in three games (two starts) in early June, then coming up from Bristol for a spot-start July 7 at Hickory. Between the SAL and Appalachian League, he is 4-5 with a 2.49 ERA (22 IP/79.2 IP) with 86 strikeouts and six walks in 14 games (13 starts). He dominated the APPY, going 1-1 with a 2.41 ERA in three starts. He struck out a career-high nine in his first game of the year with Bristol and equaled that mark on July 12 in 6.0 innings at Elizabethton. He rejoined the Intimidators when Braulio Ortiz was promoted to A-Advanced Winston-Salem July 18. The Sox drafted Bucciferro in the 14th round of the June 2012 draft out of Michigan State where he started for four years and now ranks among school leaders in starts, wins, strikeouts and IP.
Dealing for Delmarva: Bennett Parry, who turned 22 this month, makes his ninth start of the season and his second against Kannapolis. He worked 6.0 scoreless innings to lead the Birds to a 3-0 shutout win against the Intimidators on Aug. 11 at CMC-NorthEast Stadium. As a starter, Parry is 2-1 with a 3.15 ERA (14 ER/40 IP) in eight starts compared to 0-1 with a 4.41 ERA in seven relief appearances this year. While Parry is coming off his roughest start of the season, allowing six runs over 5.2 innings, he had posted a 1.27 ERA in his previous four starts in August. The left-hander is holding right-handed hitters to a .230 average while lefties are batting .314 (11-35) against him. He spent last season between the GCL Orioles and Short-Season Aberdeen, going 1-4 with a 2.70 ERA (14 ER/46.2 IP) with 52 strikeouts and 14 walks. He made his professional debut with the GCL Orioles in 2011 appearing in two games. The Orioles drafted Parry in the 40th round of the June 2011 draft.
May-hem: The South Atlantic League recognized Jacob May as the Batter of the Week for Aug. 19-25, the first Intimidator to earn a weekly award in 2013. The center fielder went 2-3 with two stolen bases and two runs scored on Tuesday, extending his hitting streak to a career-best 14 games, batting .446 (25-56) with four doubles, two triples and two home runs with seven RBI since Aug. 13. He has an on-base percentage of .492, is slugging .696, and has recorded nine multi-hit games in this span. After hitting just .174 in 24 game in July, the White Sox third round pick in June 2013 owns a slash of .392/.440/.639 in 24 August games.
Warm Coats: All-Star Jason Coats ranks fourth in the SAL with 81 RBI this season, just six behind league-leader Francisco Sosa of Asheville (87). The outfielder ranks second in at-bats (492) and third in games (127). Coats is batting .268 for Kannapolis in his professional debut and leads Kannapolis with 12 home runs.
Tim's Tally: Tim Anderson, the White Sox first round pick in the June 2013 draft, is on an 8-game hitting streak, the second-longest of his season. He is batting .345 (10-29) in eight games since Aug. 19, and he has hit safely in 19 of his last 22 games. Anderson is batting .286 (26-91) in 23 games in August after a rough July in which he hit .235. Anderson made his professional debut with Kannapolis on June 20, and he is batting .273 this season.
Adam Untouchable: Since moving into the rotation, Adam Lopez has been one of the most consistent arms for the Intimidators. He is now 3-1 with a 1.62 ERA (6 ER/33.1 IP) in his six starts compared to going 1-2 with a 3.19 ERA in 25 relief appearances. Lopez has not given up a run in his last three starts, spanning 18.0 innings.
Fresh Danish: Tyler Danish, the White Sox 2nd round pick (55th overall) in the June 2013 draft, worked 2.0 scoreless innings with four strikeouts (three looking) in his Class A debut Saturday with the Intimidators. Danish retired six of the seven batters he faced, allowing one single. Chicago promoted the right-hander from Advanced Rookie Bristol on Aug. 20. He went 1-0 with a 1.38 ERA in 13 games (1 start) in the Appalachian League. He is expected to make one more appearance, working another 2.0 innings, before the season ends.
