Eagles to Donate Proceeds from Adult Camp to Meningitis Fund

July 6, 2010 - Central Hockey League (CHL)
Colorado Eagles News Release

FORT COLLINS, Colo. - The Colorado Eagles announced today that they will donate 100 percent of the proceeds from their upcoming adult hockey camp (to be held on July 23-24) to Sierra's Race Against Meningitis to help fight the disease that recently saw an outbreak in Northern Colorado. In addition to camp registration fees, a donation box will be set up at the NoCo Ice Center during the camp to be contributed to the fund.

Last month, two men in Fort Collins died -- and two more were infected -- by a strain of meningococcal bacteria; three of the four men were part of an adult hockey league in the city. It is likely that Brian Wormus, 29-years old, and Nick Smith, 28-years old, both contracted the bacteria on June 9 and succumbed to the fast-striking disease within two weeks. The two other men who contracted the infection are still hospitalized.

The disease spreads through saliva or nasal secretions from the nose or throat of an infected person. In the case of the three hockey players, the infection may have been passed through multiple possibilities including the sharing of water bottles and the exposure to nasal and/or oral secretions as they exerted themselves throughout the game.

In the coming days, more details will be announced about the Colorado Eagles' involvement in "The Faceoff Against Meningitis," a benefit event being coordinated by the Fort Collins Adult Hockey Association & Sierra's Race Against Meningitis; a Web site for the event (www.FaceoffAgainstMeningitis.com) will be active on Thursday, July 8.

*SPECIAL NOTE* - Also on July 8, Sierra's Race Against Meningitis has set up a FREE vaccination clinic at Crossroads Church in Loveland, Colo. The free clinic will be open from 4-8 p.m, with 300 Menactra vaccines available (first-come, first-served) to those qualified between the ages of 11-55. For more information, please visit the following Web site: http://sierrasraceagainstmeningitis.com/Free_Vaccinations.html.

About Meningitis (from www.cdc.gov)

Meningitis is a disease caused by the inflammation of the protective membranes covering the brain and spinal cord known as the meninges. The inflammation is usually caused by an infection of the fluid surrounding the brain and spinal cord. Meningitis may develop in response to a number of causes, usually bacteria or viruses, but meningitis can also be caused by physical injury, cancer or certain drugs. The severity of illness and the treatment for meningitis differ depending on the cause. Thus, it is important to know the specific cause of meningitis. For example, bacterial meningitis is usually more severe than viral, fungal, or parasitic meningitis. Although it can be very serious, bacterial meningitis can be treated with antibiotics that can prevent severe illness and reduce the spread of infection from person to person. For long-term protection, there is a vaccine that targets four types of invasive meningococcal disease.
