SYDNEY- The Screaming Eagles rally fell short on Tuesday night against a Moncton Wildcats that moved into first place in the QMJHL with the 4-3 victory.

The first eight minutes proved to be the difference as Moncton jumped out to a 3-0 lead. Just 83 seconds into contest Jeremy McKenna would jumpstart the Wildcats offense. McKenna came up the right wing, elected to keep the puck on an odd man rush and whipped it off the crossbar and past Kevin Mandolese to give his side the early lead.

Two goals 23 seconds apart would further pad the lead for the visitors. Tristan DeJong made it a 2-0 score with a shot through traffic, and then Jacob Stewart would set up in front of the goal, convert a pass from behind the net and put the Wildcats up 3-0.

The Screaming Eagles would show some pushback though, as Gabriel Proulx drove the goal and capitalized on a rebound for a goal at the 11:37 mark of the opening frame. The period would finish with the Eagles trailing 3-1.

Cape Breton had an opportunity early in the second stanza to further reduce the lead with an early power play but instead it was Moncton cashing in. Dylan Seitz was given plenty of time and came in on a breakaway short handed, putting it through Mandolese to make it a 4-1 score.

The next power play would be more successful for the Eagles. It took just nine seconds for Mathias Laferrière to convert on the one timer and push the Eagles within two goals.

In the latter half of the third period the Eagles would really take control of the game generating chances, but couldn't solve Francis Leclerc. In the final four minutes Marc-André Dumont would elect to pull Mandolese for an extra attacker. The move would get the Eagles within a goal, as Egor Sokolov tipped a rebound past Leclerc.

After the Eagles gained possession in the Moncton zone, Dumont would again opt to use six attackers, but couldn't find the tying goal.

Leclerc stopped 29 of 32 shots in the victory. Mandolese allowed four goals on 21 shots in the loss.

The Screaming Eagles will continue their home stand on Saturday as they host the Acadie-Bathurst Titan. Puck drop is 7 PM. Tickets can be purchased at the Centre 200 box office, by phone at 902-564-2200 or online at https://tickets.capebreton.ca/Online/default.asp
