Welcome to Eagles' Nest Notes, the weekly Saginaw Spirit update and preview. The Spirit enter the week with a record of 29-18-0-2 and 60 points. Saginaw is in second place in the OHL West Division, nine points behind first place Plymouth. The Spirit will travel to Sault Ste. Marie on Friday night to take on the Greyhounds and then return home to host their conference rival Erie Otters.

The Spirit are clicking at a league leading 25.9% on the power play at home and are ranked 2nd overall at 23.0%.

Sealing the Deal

The Spirit are the only remaining OHL team to have not lost a game this season in which they lead after two periods of play.

Forward Jan Mursak leads the Spirit offense with 60 points

Forward Ryan McDonough is leading the team in goal scoring with 27 goals.

Forward Tyler Haskins is leading the team in assists scoring with 46 assists.

Defenseman Patrick McNeill is tied for 6th in d-man scoring with 41 points (17g 24a).

Defenseman Nigel Williams is tied for 17th in rookie scoring with 26 points (13g 13a).

Defenseman Andrew Hotham is tied for 17th in d-man scoring with 30 points (11g 19a).

Forward Tom Pyatt (26g 27a) is tied for 1st in game winning goal scoring (7gw), tied for 4th in short handed goal scoring (4sh), and is tied for 19th in plus/minus with a plus-21.

Forward Jan Mursak is ranked 4th in rookie scoring with 60 points (18g 42a) and tied for 13th in assists scoring.

Forward Tyler Haskins (10g 46a) is tied for 6th in assists scoring.

Forward Ryan McDonough (27g 17a) is ranked 6th in power play goal scoring (16ppg).

Forward Tomas Zaborsky is ranked 14th in rookie scoring with 30 points (12g 18a).

Forward Jack Combs (8g 19a) is tied for 18th in game winning goal scoring (4gw).

Goaltender Ryan Daniels is ranked 4th in total wins (24w), 9th in save percentage (0.901 %) and is 9th in goals against average (3.25gaa).

The Spirit have taken four of the five contests from the Greyhounds so far this season. The Spirit notched a 4-1 victory in Saginaw on December 28th in their most recent meeting. The Spirit have a record of 15-20-1-0 against the Hounds since 2002, with a record of 6-12-0-0 when playing in the Soo. However, the Spirit have yet to lose in the Greyhounds new home, Steelback Centre, as they took the two previous games contested there this season.

Sault Ste. Marie enters the week with a record of 24-20-0-5, 53 points and fourth place in the OHL West Division. The Hounds offense is led by center Dustin Jeffrey (27-42-69) and right winger Cody Thornton (25-30-55). D-men Josh Godfrey (20-20-40) and Andrew Campbell anchor the defensive core, with Campbell tallying a plus-14 so far this season. Netminder Kyle Gajewski has carried the majority of the load between the pipes this season, recording a 20-16-0-2 record.

The Spirit are 2-0-0-0 against the Otters so far this season; the Spirit won 4-3 in November and 7-1 in the December meeting. Since 2002 Saginaw has a record of 10-7-0-0 against Erie, with a record of 5-3-0-0 at the Dow Event Center. Left winger Patrick Asselin leads the Spirit in scoring against the Otters, tallying a goal and 3 assists in two games.

Erie is in 5th place in the OHL Midwest Division with a record of 12-34-1-2 and 27 points. Left winger Zack Torquato (20-29-49) has notched 10 goals and 16 assists since joining the Otters in late Novemeber. Defenseman Josh Kidd (8-13-21) and rookie Mitch Gaulton (5-8-13) work the blue line while, goaltender Kevin Beech has posted a 3-3-1-0 record since joining the Otters on a January 9th trade with the Sudbury Wolves.
