Eagles Fall 5-2 to Islanders on Sunday in Sydney

SYDNEY - It wasn't the Eagles day on Sunday as they fell 5-2 to the Charlottetown Islanders at Centre 200.

Charlottetown carried the opening period, outshooting the Eagles 15-5, and were rewarded with the opening goal. Patrick Guay ripped a shot by William Grimard at the 6:28 mark and it was the only goal before the first siren. The goal wasn't the only bad news for the Eagles as Jarrett Baker would suffer an injury and did not return for the rest of the period.

Baker was back for the second frame, but didn't even have a chance to get on the ice before Guay ripped his second of the night by Grimard. Things didn't look good for the Eagles, but the home side was able to draw Charlottetown into penalty trouble to get back into the game.

With Drew Elliot in the box for hooking, Dawson Stairs buried a one timer from Félix Paré to cut the lead in half. And less than two minutes later, both Noah Laaouan and Keiran Gallant were in the penalty box and the Eagles had a five on three for 1:47.

A successful penalty kill may have given the Islanders momentum, although they dodged multiple close calls. An apparent Mark Rumsey tying goal was called off to a hand pass, and Dawson Stairs and Émile Hegarty-Aubin both hit the crossbar during the power play. (Earlier in the period, Charlottetown's Cédric Desruisseaux hit the crossbar himself.)

Charlottetown used this penalty kill to their advantage, and the next time the Eagles were on the power play it would be the Islanders scoring- after Noah Laaouan fooled Grimard with a shot that saw his stick explode, but the puck go over the line. Before period's end, Brett Budgell finished a drop pass in the slot from Thomas Casey to give the visitors a 4-1 edge.

Video review was at it again halfway through the third period- after Sam Oliver ripped a shot over Grimard, play continued for about a minute, and was looked at at the next stoppage. It was determined to be a good goal and it would seal the deal for the Islanders, making it a 5-1 lead.

The Eagles would get some consolation in the final minute on a power play from Paré. Stairs and Liam Kidney both drew assists on the goal, securing two point nights for all of them.

Due to a number of players being injured, the Eagles used two affiliate players in Sunday's game. After making his QMJHL debut Friday, Michael McQuaid suited up again. Sydney native Trey Sturge made his QMJHL debut for the Eagles. The forward recorded two shots, took five face-offs, and drew a Charlottetown penalty in his first outing.

Jacob Goobie picked up the win in goal, stopping 26 of 28 shots. Grimard turned aside 31 of 36 in the loss.

The Eagles will head out on the road next weekend for a pair of games against 902 rivals. On Saturday night the Eagles visit Charlottetown- puck drop is at 7:00 PM and it will be broadcast on Eastlink Television.
