Houston Dynamo FC News Release
HOUSTON, TX. (January 29, 2008)-The Houston Dynamo, looking for depth at goalkeeper, has ventured across the pond for help.
The Dynamo has signed 33-year-old Tony Caig to a Major League Soccer contract. Caig is expected to serve as backup goalkeeper to Pat Onstad, who last November became the first MLS goalkeeper to win three MLS Cup Championships.
Caig, a native of Whitehaven, England, most recently played for Gretna of the Scottish Premier League. Caig has also played with Newcastle of the English Premier League, and has also had stints with internationally-renowned clubs Carlisle United, Blackpool, Charlton Athletic and Hibernian. Caig is no stranger to North America, having played briefly with the United Soccer League Vancouver Whitecaps.
"We are excited to obtain a player of Tony's caliber," said Dynamo coach Dominic Kinnear. "Tony has a wealth of international experience and will fill a need on our roster."
The Dynamo opens 2008 training camp Friday, February 1 at 10:00 a.m. at the University of Houston's Carl Lewis Track. The defending MLS Cup Champions will compete in the Pan Pacific Championship February 20 & 23 in Honolulu, Hawaii, and will host CONCACAF first round action vs. Guadalajara's CSD Municipal March 19 at Robertson Stadium (7:30 p.m. CT). The Dynamo opens MLS play Saturday, March 29 at New England, prior to the home opener Sunday, April 6 (2:00 p.m. CT) against FC Dallas.
