Marco Pappa and Gonzalo Pineda each scored in a six-minute span in the second half to lead Seattle Sounders FC to a 2-0 win over the Houston Dynamo before 50,276 at CenturyLink Field in Seattle on Sunday night.

With the game scoreless into the 69th minute, Pappa delivered Seattle a lead when he turned near the top of the box and drove a low shot from 20 yards that deflected off Dynamo defender David Horst and changed direction on its way into the net.

A few minutes later, Ricardo Clark was called for pulling Obafemi Martins inside the penalty area on a Seattle free kick and the Sounders were awarded a penalty kick.

Pineda drove the penalty to his right and Tally Hall guessed correctly and blocked the shot with one hand, but the ball bounced off the turf and carried into the net for a 2-0 Sounders advantage.

The Dynamo opened the game with attacking intent and carried an 8-6 advantage in shots and a 5-1 advantage in corner kicks over Seattle in the first half, but couldn't convert their chances into an opening goal.

A promising buildup began when Giles Barnes drove down the left flank and served a low cross through the box. After a shot was blocked, the ball fell to Boniek Garcia, who drilled a goal-bound shot that was blocked by Seattle defender Djimi Traore, who was ruled to have blocked the shot with his arm as the Dynamo earned a penalty kick.

Brad Davis took the penalty and went to his right, but Sounders goalkeeper Stefan Frei went the same way and blocked the shot to keep the game scoreless.

Soon after, Clark met a corner kick from Davis with a clear header but steered it just over the crossbar for a near miss.

In the second half, Barnes beat Traore on the dribble inside the area, but Frei closed the space well and blocked Barnes' shot from close range.

The Dynamo (22 points) are in ninth place in the Eastern Conference, three points behind Chicago, four back of New England and five removed from Columbus and Philadelphia for the fifth and final playoff spot.

The Dynamo return home to host the Philadelphia Union on Friday at 8 p.m. CT at BBVA Compass Stadium.
