June 27, 2012 - Northwest League (NWL1)
Yakima Bears News Release
The Yakima Bears lost to the Tri-City Dust Devils 3-1 Tuesday night at Gesa Stadium in Pasco, Washington. The Bears were outhit in the game 9-7, but caught some unlucky breaks on hard-hit balls.
The Bears struggled against Tri-City starter Josh Slatts, who faced four or fewer batters in each of the first five innings. Bears starter Bobby O'Neill was able to keep the Dust Devils at bay for the first three innings, but was removed due to pitch count.
The Dust Devils scored first, off of Jeff Gibbs, who made his professional debut. Gibbs recorded only one out and gave up one run on a hit, two walks, and had two wild pitches. Gibbs left two on, but his replacement on the hill, Kyle Owings, got a strikeout-throw out double play and then tossed three more scoreless frames in his Bears debut.
The Bears answered back off of Slaats in the sixth inning, when Mike Lang hit a two-out single, moved to second when Shaun Cooper was hit by a pitch and took first base, and Jacob House singled to score Lang. That run tied the game at 1-1.
With Frank Santana pitching for the Bears in the eighth inning, the Dust Devils took the lead for good. Santana fanned the first two batters, but then gave up a single and a two-run home run.
All seven of the Bears hits were singles in the defeat. Both Lang and Ronnie Freeman had a pair of hits. The Bears lined in to two double plays, had three other line-outs, and had some well hit balls run down in the outfield.
At 6-6 the Bears still have a two-game lead for first place in the Northwest League's East Division. With the series tied at 1-1, the Bears and Dust Devils will fight for the series win starting at 7:15 Wednesday night at Gesa Stadium. The Bears scheduled starter is left-handed pitcher Alex Carreras, who is expected to be opposed by right-handed pitcher Ben Hughes.
