Dust Devils Rally to Beat Bears
August 24, 2009 - Northwest League (NWL1)
Tri-City Dust Devils News Release
The Tri-City Dust Devils looked bad offensively through four innings as they struck out eight times and had no hits. At the same time, the Yakima Bears jumped out for an early lead and fans at Gesa Stadium were left waiting for some sort of offense. The wait was well worth it as the Dust Devils came back in a furious rally on their way to a 4-3 win over the Bears. Reliever Brad McAtee gave a heroic performance for the Dust Devils as he shut down the Bears for five innings allowing only two hits and no outs in relief of starter Wes Musick.
Yakima started off well as they chalked up Musick's first earned run of the year in the first inning. Dan Kaczrowski lead off with an infield single and advanced to second as Tyson Van Winkle was walked. Ryan Wheeler drove a single just over shortstop Joey Wong to score Kaczrowski and give the Bears a 1-0 lead. In the third inning, the Bears were able to extend their lead as the Dust Devils offense lay stagnant. Van Winkle started the inning with a walk and advanced to third on a single by Wheeler. Matthew Davidson drove Van Winkle home with a single to right field. Gerson Montilla drove in another run with a double off the left field wall to make the game 3-0.
Going into the bottom of the fifth inning, the Dust Devils offense had been embarrassed by Yakima starter Brad Wilson. Wilson had struck out eight of thirteen batters until Orlando Sandoval connected with a single down the third base line for the first Tri-City hit of the game. After a balk to move Sandoval to second, Joseph Sanders crushed a ball which bounced off the top of the left-center wall to score Sandoval and make the game 3-1.
Kent Matthes helped the Dust Devils chip away at the lead as he lead off the bottom of the seventh inning with a monster home run over the left field wall off of reliever Bill Harvil. Orlando Sandoval followed with another hit down the left field line, this time, for a double. Joseph Sanders doubled immediately after Sanders to drive home Sandoval and tie the game. The rally continued as Dallas Tarleton gave the Dust Devils their fourth straight hit and the lead with a single to drive Sanders home and make the game 4-3.
Sanders was 2-3 on the night with two doubles and RBI. Sandoval went 2-4 at the plate with a run scored. Charles Ruiz picked up his 15th save of the year for the Dust Devils.
