Yakima Bears News Release
PASCO, Wash. - Brad Wilson was flat-out phenomenal over six innings for the Yakima Bears (23-39) but once he exited, the game went south as the Tri-City Dust Devils (36-26) overcame a 3-0 deficit to beat the Bears 4-3 in front of 1,954 fans in the series opener at Gesa Stadium Sunday night.
The Bears led 3-0 after three innings, notching RBI singles from Ryan Wheeler and Matt Davidson, and a run-scoring double from Gerson Montilla.
Wilson walked Tim Wheeler to begin the bottom of the first inning, then retired the next 13 batters: striking out nine along the way, including six in a row at one point. Wilson pitched six innings, allowing only one run on two hits, walking one and striking out a Bears' season-high 11 hitters.
In the bottom of the seventh Tri-City tallied three runs on four hits to take a 4-3 lead, sparked by a lead-off home run by Kent Matthes off Will Harvil.
Harvil (2-2) took the loss, allowing three in 1/3 inning. Brad McAtee (2-3) was fantastic out of the Devils bullpen, allowing no runs on two hits in five innings to earn the win. Charlie Ruiz pitched a scoreless ninth to pick up his league-high 15th save, allowing the tying run to reach scoring position before buckling down and ending the game.
Roberto Rodriguez was sharp for the Bears offensively, going 3-for-4 with two stolen bases in the loss.
The two squads will be back at it Monday night at 7:15 for game two of the three-game series. Andrew Wolcott (2-5, 4.94 ERA) gets the nod for Yakima against Josh Hungerman (1-1, 2.29 ERA) for Tri-City.
